Gobble Gobble + Updates

Anyone else planning to stalk a gobbling tom come next Wednesday?

Update: Was out dark and early opening morning in Graham County with my hunting buddy. Saw about ten birds but the toms were henned up. Then a lone tom came in but stopped at the edge of gun range, turned around and went back. No shot taken. That was the only possible shot on the morning set up. My buddy went to work for awhile midday.

Went a mile east for our evening set up. When we arrived about eight birds were already out feeding on some lower ground that we could not get to without spooking them so we set our decoys near the edge of a rise above them and started calling. They ignored us for nearly an hour then suddenly came running. Weird. A hen popped over the hill followed by a jake and a tom. It was my buddy's turn to shoot first at a single but the tom turned my way and he said take him if I wanted to. Done. Weather got wet Thursday afternoon so I came home and will head out for my second one when the weather clears. Had a great time.

Second Update: Returned to Graham Co. Sun. afternoon. Got set up about 5 and started calling. Three males came out in 10 minutes, then two more came out. They fooled around eating, playing tag, and ignoring my decoys except when I called. Finally two jakes and a tom turned toward the decoys and began ambling in, no hurry at all. The two jakes stopped 10 feet away from the decoys and made a few spurt/alarm sounds but then quieted down. The tom had hung back out of range. When the jakes quieted the tom came within range. Time: 5:40 p.m. Done for the season.

I have it on the calendar for our limited Unit 4, but doubt if I can work it in for a couple weeks.

Good luck to you.

I got a late start today. Got into my blind at about 8:30.
Saw turkey track from this morning in front of the blind, but did not see a single turkey.

So I may get my fanny out of bed early enough to get there while its still dark.

Youth season over here. Waste of time getting out of bed this morning. "Guided " jr and his buddy. Ten minutes in we were done. 9.5 and a double 7" bird. Greatest turkey hunt I have ever been involved . Jrs buddy shot my beretta for his bird. Made me proud of them both. I called them in . All 8 feet from were they flew down.

Hunted Saturday morning and saw quite a few. The Toms are henned up very hard but a lot farther along than they have been in the past.

Hunt went great other than at lunch we decided to do a little target practice and I broke a limb my bow. That gonna hurt the old wallet.

We hunted yesterday morning for the youth. Softball tournament put the daughter out of hunting business on saturday. We got busted twice. Called in two. Must have seen us when they came over the hill. We didnt move but weren't masked up. Or painted up. Probably saw our white faces. Not many leaves on the trees yet either. Were not in very thick cover. We had to stop at 9am with birds still gobbling to go to play in the championship bracket. Priorities!

Ill be in the Chautauqua County, Kansas turkey woods this weekend. My buddy's 5 year old son shot his first turkey (a big longbeard at that) on Saturday with my old Mossberg youth 20 gauge pump I lent him. I killed my first turkeys with that shotgun many years ago. If that doesn't put a smile on your face nothing will:D

Went out last weekend with the bow and they were active but no shots fired. Going out tomorrow between rains to try some field reaping with the CZ 612 Turkey. Have one strutting in front of my cell camera on my farm.

Good hunting with the CZ 612. Pretty gun, BTW.

Man were the toms busy this morning at the Ponderosa. There were two that I didn't think were ever going to call a truce.

The pheasants and quail are really going to the nest right now. I kicked up more of them than ever in short time last night working on habitat. Keeping my hopes up that conditions will be great for a good hatch this year.

I can concur on the turkey activity. Watched a pretty got fight between three longbeards the other morning. I have also been seeing the quail pairing up, hearing lots of whistling. Nesting conditions look superb in eastern Kansas.

Prototype turkey gun? Please post photo or description. ;)

Half the tom's breast in the crock pot right now being converted into turkey vegetable rice soup. MmMmm good! :p

I've never killed one that didn't have ticks. At least spring birds. I was given as a present some tick resistent camo. Pants and a long sleeve shirt. Haven't had one tick on me yet. And I'm a magnet. I usually come out just like your son. Covered in em! One time I had to get the duck tape out there were so many on my legs. I was skeptical, but am now a believer. The clothes are made by gamehide.
