Got Shot Today!

First time in over 50 years of hunting that I caught 2 pellets flush. Both hit my abdomen just below the rib cage. I was wearing a hunting shirt and an UnderArmour t-shirt. The pellets didn't penetrate my clothing but one split the skin and drew some blood. Hurt like a mother. Thought I was hit by more than 2 pellets. My friend and I were walking the edge of a slough back to the road. The third member of our party was on the road when a rooster flushed from the ditch. He thought the bird was clear of us and fired. I'm very thankful I didn't take any in the face or maybe an eye. :eek: I had been wearing my safety glasses but the last time back to the vehicle I took them off and forgot to put them back on. I'll have those safety glasses on from now on.

So let this experience be a reminder to everyone to be careful in the field and wear those safety glasses. I know a guy that was hunting near Aberdeen, a number of years back, that took a pellet in the eye. The pellet went up into his brain and he suffered some permanent brain damage.
 
Glad you are OK, George. Thanks for posting - a good warning to all of us about safety.

Last week I had a fellow shoot over my head. He's on one side of the draw and I'm on the other. This was my bird all the way...but he shot anyway. I wear shooting glasses over my regular pair - double protection and I see quite a bit better.

Man glad you are alright !!!

Shooting or safety glasses for me to , I took a # 5 pellet to the cheek years ago , broke the skin , That's Damn close to an eye .

Glad you are ok , thanks for the post as a reminder for all to be safe as you can and everybody to take precaution
 
oh Goerge so glade your ok. I have been shot dove hunting more than one time in a certain flied. I dont go there anymore. Like you said it hurts like a mother.
 
Glad you're okay! If I was your buddy (I hope I never am "that guy"), I would unload my gun, head straight to the truck, and go home. I can't begin to imagine the guilt I'd feel.
 
I am glad you are able to laugh about it. I had one penetrate my eyebrow many years ago. I popped it out the next day.
 
I have been shot twice. Also deer hunting big groups I had slugs wiz right by me, you could feel the shock and hear it sizzle through the air. More then once. Why I quit hunting in big groups 15 plus years ago. Glad all is well. Heck I get spooked when someone does not have a break open gun. Or the guy with his gun on his shoulder facing straight back. Better to hunt alone or with a "safe" minded person. All you have to do is watch TV or youtube to see how many goof balls there is out there.
 
Glad you came out all right. A pup I sold three years ago was shot and killed in Lyman County opening weekend while the owner was guiding. He and his wife are devastated. The dog was chasing a cripple when another bird got up and the shooters gun went off as he was raising it. Dog about 12 feet away. Safety off way to early obviously.

Be careful out there please!!!!

I to have had this happen to me--I was lucky that it was later in the season and I was wearing heavy clothing. I took the edge of a pattern of copper plated 5 shot from a 12 ga from about 40 yards mostly from the mid chest on down--this stunned me and knocked me to the ground--none of this shot got thru my brush pants or my heavy canvas jacket--it just hurt like he--. I did take 4 flyers in the face area and WAY to close to the eyes.

I remember that day by wearing the PF orange hat from that deal--it still has blood stains from me laying on top of it---ALWAYS WEAR THE SAFETY GEAR

I share your sentiments and experiences. I had a group of 6 hunters all unload their guns at a deer that ran between us. I had to hit the ground and counted all 30 shots whizz past and over me from their slug guns.

After I counted 30 I popped my head up and saw the buck continue running unscathed.

A 2nd time we were doing a small drive for my cousin's boy who had never gotten a shot at a deer. He was about 17 or 18 at the time. We gave him explicit instructions about what was going to happen. His father and I were going to drive a small, dense pine thicket that we knew held deer. They were going to come out on a trail then head across a field to where we had set him up.

But we told him he could not shoot until the deer reached a certain point in the field which would have provided us with at least a 45 degree angle os safety.

So guess what happens? Before we even get into the pines, deer start running out right where we told him and the kid just starts unloading right at us. His dad dove into the truck with his feet hanging out and I tried to get behind the door and wheel as best I could. Cannot believe he didn't put a slug into the radiator but he missed everything, deer included. He had shots not more than 10 yards at several different deer.

No more drive, no more groups, no more. I tempted it twice. I will not tempt it a third time.
 
Glad you're ok & that it wasn't worse. Makes me glad I hunt alone & away from from others. Still, it's a good reminder because "stuff happens."
 
Getting shot is my greatest fear whenever I go hunting, no matter what I'm hunting for. For pheasant, it's just three of us, so the chances are smaller. For deer, it's 8 - 12 of us driving the woods and it's been drilled into me to be sure of what's behind the deer before I shoot. I know the rest of the party knows this as well, but I never know how much in the forefront it is when they shoot.
