What was your most memorable moment from last season? A child's first day afield or first bird? A new dog that showed out to be a true hunter? A great shot or a great day of great shots? A reunion with old huntin' buddies? A great trip to a new place you always wanted to hunt? A great evening of drinks and dinner after a tough day afield? A really good welcome home kiss from your spouse or special someone? A new gun? Come on, tell us about it.

A wing tipped mallard my dog jumped from the tules in a flooded rice field. My little 45lb springer chased him down after about 300yds in chest deep (for the dog) water. Once he caught it a guy appeared from a blind and tried to get JP to retrieve it to him. JP ran right past him and delivered it to hand to me 100yds away from the guy. He came and gathered the bird from me all the time giving his black lab an earfull for being shown up by a lowly "chicken dog". That was a great sight!

Looks like a happy bunch.

Nothing sticks out except when I go I switch which dog goes for the day, so they all can have fun. My male Odie went I think 32 or so hens found and flushed on a few trips out when it was him up to bat. Some how he stayed steady, and then finally it happened, threw his head and charged into a cattail patch, and a Roster popped up. Luckily I dumped him and he made a nice retrieve way out in the frozen snowy cattails. So thats it, Odie finally got a rooster last season would be the moment I remember most. Just him and I alone on a beautiful after work hunt.

Good Dog work

The best was watching my friends balck lab work a run and sit, run and sit Rooster for 5 min or so at the end of a crp plot.

Flushed him about 5 ft form me, it was and explosion of grass and bird with the roosters tail feathers in the dogs mouth, a really great experience.:10sign:

posted earlier but I just couldn't resist to tell it again :D

Day Three of his 1st pheasant hunt. Froid had been trailing this rooster for probably 1/4 to 1/2 mile through a winding creek bottom. As soon as he got hot (helicopter tail), I knew that he was on the bird.
Pretty happy for a 15 month pup on his 3rd day on wild ringnecks.

My girlfreinds first rooster. And taking her and my sister out to get there first geese.

End of October 2nd weekend in South Dakota,
We got out late that day and really didnt do very good until the last field. It was a walk in, we get there with about 45 minutes left to hunt, I look up and there is a group of 7 just leaving the field with 3 pointers and 1 lab. GREAT...
Oh well we said lets do it. I took Jake out, walked towards the field and a couple of guysfrom that group come up and said we just walked this and only shot 4 birds. I said thats OK we dont have time to hit anoter field, so off we went.
Snakey Jake my Pointing Lab started hunting and about 100 yards in the field went on point. Rooster bird one, we walked about another 200 yards and a point again, then jake is off again trailing the bird then point, then off againg then point. Rooster bird 2, by then the group that walked the field before us were just watching us, we walked the 1 mile length of the field and Jake produced, 6 hens and 7 roosters, me, my son and son in law, picked up 6 of the 7....and Jake had a blast.......

NW Minnesota, three public land Roosters in 45 minutes. Our first three bird limit and my Pup stuck all three and gave great retrieves. I was, well, I still am, quite proud of that day.

We went to Lake of the Woods for Minnesota duck opener. Saturday afternoon I took my springer Ellie out to find some grouse. It was my second time grouse hunting. About 5 minutes in I shot my first grouse. 38 minutes later (I know because I texted the guys at camp that I got one) I had my 5 bird limit of grouse.

15 Second Limit

It has to be my fourth day of hunting South Dakota last year. After two hours and only one flush which my partner missed, we hit a slew through a cut corn field and flushed the mother lode of pheasants. In about 15 seconds with a Model 12 16 gauge and I had my limit of roosters. I don't always want to limit out that fast but it sure was fun!

Lock and Load! :D

I usually hunt alone and when I go to SD I take 4-5 dogs and mostly just enjoy watching them have a good time. I get my share of shooting opportunities, but daily limits aren't my only objective.

Last year I thought I had a kill shot on bird going straight out. The dogs were steady on point and shot. (They learned a long time ago that chasing flyers was a waste of time and likely to have negative consequences.) They ran to where the bird dropped and I quickly reloaded and realized the dogs weren't near where the bird went down. Dang, a runner. Next thing the girls head back to me out of the tall stuff and no bird, followed by my boy with one very dead pheasant. About 15 minutes later we repeated the whole thing only this time the bird tried to double back on them and was running for all he was worth directly at me when my boy overtook him and hit him like a semi. Scooped that bird right up and retrieved him without breaking stride. He had no intentions of sharing with the girls.

The first day of the South Dakota resident opener, my 2 oldest sons, my 2 labs and me! I had a little hidden public spot that I thought would be good, I was right! Less then an hour later we had our limit, the boys had stories and the dogs were ready for the "rest" of the season!

This one is easy... I was out hunting in January, and was on my way to the first field. I was cruising along at about 35 m.p.h. when I noticed probably 40 deer in a field. As I was watching them, I came to an abrupt halt. Next thing I know, I'm stuck in a 5-foot snow drift. Snow in the engine compartment, and snow up to the doors. Luckily I came prepared and brought a shovel. :D It took me and my buddy over an hour to dig out.

First day in South Dakota, just out of truck after 16 hr drive, hunting strip of walk-in,Elli (2 yr old Brittany on first trip)point a rooster,I nailed it on 2nd shotwith my 20ga. only to watch it fall into lake, she watched it splash, looked at me for a second then bailed in like the champ she is,what a sight ,bird almost as big as her swimming back and retrieve to hand....good dogThe next day she pointed a skunk for my uncle and hunting partner,, his reaction to what he found when he stepped in front of her was close 2nd.

Hard to pick just one

Before leaving for a weekend trip to SW Minn. my wife insisted I take ``her'' yellow lab, Buck. Now, my black lab, Daisy, is a bird-hunting machine. Buck? Not so much. More of a potato-chip hunting machine and couch hog. Anyway, I reluctantly agreed to bring ``the slow kid'' along. One thing leads to another and we're out in a WPA when a rooster jumps. My Dad and I both put some pellets into it and it goes down some distance away in some flooded willows. I send in my star, Daisy, to swim out and find it. She goes out, she comes back, taking hand signal directions like a champ but with no result. Out of the corner of my eye I see Buck wandering around in a flooded pothole, swimming in circles. ``Dumb dog'' I thought to myself. After about 15 minutes Daisy and I are out of ideas when I see ``the slow kid'' emerging from the pothole with a very wet, very dead rooster in his mouth -- at age six, his first ever retrieve.

He dropped it in front of my Dad and from that moment on he has been a dyed-in-the-wool pheasant dog. I could not have been more proud (and boy did I get grief from the bride when word got back about his triumph.)

Watching my buddy's young Griffon find & point her first Rooster . . . still haven't figured-out which one of the two was more excited . . .

group hunt

First day in SD...first full week of November.
Hunting with a large group...getting ready to walk some milo strips. I and my lab volunteered to move up 50 yards or so to flank the strip we were hunting. My lab has been known to get lost in those thick milo strips...so I figure on his first outing I would keep him where I could watch him. On our way to our spot I see a little piece of weedy cover. Decide to veer over and check it out. Dog flushes rooster....I knock it down...dog retrieves it!! Always good to get that first bird under your belt!!
Best part....5 guys in vehicle driving by to go block the other end witnessed the entire scene! Proud of pup who doesn't always get the glory he deserves!!
can't wait till next year :):):)
