Who I am

This probably belongs in introductions.

My name is Steve and I live in central MN. I like duck hunting and Love pheasant hunting. Training retrievers consumes every free second. I am lucky as a local trainer who is considerd by many as one of the best young dog trainers in the nation has taken me under his wing. Most people have no idea he exists as he doesn't advertise, have a website, or even a sign at the end of his driveway. I also teach community Ed obedience classes occasionally , so in a givin week I may see or have my hands on 100 different dogs. I believe my experience gives my opinion some credibility..... But it is still my opinion take it for what it's worth.

I enjoy most breeds of dogs, but labs fit me perfect. I do not care for hunting behind pointers as they don't fit my style of hunting. ESS probably are a better fit hunting wise but I love retreiver training and competing in Hunt tests and trials. What I am saying is use what ever breed fits you best and quit bashing other breeds

My training style is constantly evolving. I am willing to try any method or tool that may work better. I will always chose attrition first, but I never hesitate to use pressure if that is what's needed. I guess you could call me primarily positive but not permissive. The day you think you know everything about dog training is the day you failed as a trainer.

So if you don't like my opinion or suggestions that's ok. But now you know where I come from. And why I am troubled by breed bashing and opinions based on nothing. I walk the walk and would love to try and help inexperienced people make good breed and training choices. But some of you make it tough.

Merry Christmas

Steve

Ps I realize this was a bit of a rant but many of you I consider friends and I have never even met you. But a few of you just seem to want to cause problems.

I like it Steve. Keep up the good work with those retrievers and give them an extra treat and a scratch behind the ears for me.

Merry Christmas,
Robert

Steve,

I enjoy reading your input on training and hunting. You seem to have good taste in dogs:). I would agree that Labs fit me and my style of hunting to a T. I really enjoy watching them. I wish I had someone like yourself, or the guy you speak of, to work with. My dog is very, very good on wild roosters. I think he could be better but has probably exceeded my skills.

Steve,

You're a great contributor to this site! We're lucky to have guys like yourself around.

Forget the breed-bashers and nay-sayers. I'm no dog trainer, but I've hunted behind many different breeds and to say one is better than all others hands-down would be silly.

Anyway, don't let those that don't contribute slow down your posting please:thumbsup:

Recently we've seen quite a few posts (maybe not yours mstand) saying that flabs :D are next to worthless and that "v dogs" are the be all end all of hunting dogs. Thats fine, everyone should believe their breed of choice is the best but I doubt us with our non versatile pointers, flushers and retrievers are cleaning house and rushing out to buy a v dog. If I were to guess I bet the two guys who were recently banned were the inspiration for this post so settle down a bit. We are all passionate about our dogs and that's a good thing imo.

That's what I thought too QH.

I'm definitely not doing that. I'm into specialists and don't mind feeding, housing and caring for three of them.

We screw around a bunch on here. We had a couple week running hassle between springers and Labs where we all found pictures of the worst of each breed and shared them. ( by the way I think I won):D What Wilhelm did when he came on, infuriated many with good Labs. His ignorance and eventual banning were assured. All of our opinions are made up of our experiences. I could tell you that I had never hunted behind a good golden, until I hunted with jonnyb a few years ago. I had decent weimeraners when I was a kid, but many people come accross are not good. When the post was made, it was obvious the poster had never watched good Labs work. I get it. I tell people I pheasant hunt, and people give me a stupid look when I tell them I hunt with Labs. I for one would love to hunt with some other breeds and see how they get it done. Could be I decide I like one better than mine. Anything but a damned fabio looking springer:)

Any good dog is a good dog, especially if your talking bird dogs. :)
Those that come on a forum like UPH with the idea that "my breed is best, my dog is best" are looking for a argument, besides that, maybe should increase your medication. Strange and uninformed behavior to say the least.

Not aimed at anybody by the way.

These are the types of threads/posts that are causing me to visit this board less and less frequently. I don't need anyone's permission to agree or disagree with an opinion, another person's accomplishments and/or experiences don't necessarily have any validity for my situation. I may be the exception but I am very secure in my choice of guns, dogs, gear and tactics. I like to hear what works for you but I'm not looking for a fight if we are not in lock step agreement.

Guys, sorry, I deleted a few posts here that were struck up by one to start with. Gatz, love the topic. Just did not want to see it get bad right off. For those that read and don't like it, please refrain from starting something from nothing. I am growing tired of trying to keep things civil, and getting plenty of backlash in the process. We are all here to have fun. Lets keep it that way. So many of these things that trip people off on the site are so meaningless. Nice post Gatz, Take care.

Gatz, there in lies the problem most cases. When a thread starts, and someone asks for peoples opinion, you give it, and that should be that. All too often, right or wrong, some choose to find the wrong in whatever anyone says. Then you try to rectify or correct it. And more childish back lash results. That's the sort of thing I wish would come to a minimum. Everyone has bad days, were human. But those with consistent pestering on the negative are truly annoying. It digs deeper in your mind and makes one more angry so to speak, when it is a topic your gifted and knowledgeable about, seeking only to help another with his shortcoming, and his or her questions. I have grown to respect you on here and I for one and many enjoy sharing this site with you.:thumbsup:

lets hunt!

If a person spends any time in the field at all you notice a lot of differences. Screamers, loud whistles, beeper collars,no shock collars, shock collars, gps collars, guns, gear, vehicles wow the list could go on and on. I've hunted with them all . Some people on here are pretty rigid and set in their ways. Don't be afraid of mixing up your hunts with the different people and dog breeds on this site.

in your corner

That is EXACTLY what happened to me on the Lab replacement post and you were involved. I mis spoke, corrected myself, and admitted I mis spoke and you all continued to chastise.
But, because you are a moderator, it is ok. Double standards?
I am catching on to how this all works now.
At this point I feel like I have a right to be ruffled. I have nothing more to say about it.

I've known mstand for a couple years now. We've hunted pheasant and waterfowl together. The last thing that anyone (that actually knows her) would call her is a breed basher.

What you seem to be missing is..... No one has called Mstand a breed basher!

Sorry gadzby...that's the way she took it. She has been a great friend and hunting partner for me and my family.:10sign:

OK everyone please get off mstand and what ever is going on. I am guessing this is about the lab replacement thread. I never read all the posts. I saw a couple starting to get heated. As a mod sometimes I will post what I think will lighten the mood. Hence my robodog. That was not directed at anyone, just a mood lightener. That's it. As far as v dog, I never read back to the first post, why I asked what it was referring to. Someone told me it meant versatile. I left it at that. So That said, Mstand, don't let this get to you. Others please lay off her. And lets move on and have a productive forum. No, Mstand I am not bashing you, trying to help you. What was going on elsewhere, no clue. I don't have time to read every post on here. Take care all.
PS Women hunters Rock! Glad to have you all here.
