Turkey Hunting

their out there, just not making alot of noise.Seems like the PM works better for decoys and calling,so far.Stopped this morning to check out one of my spots, listened for 15 mins.,not a sound.Just as I was starting the truck, out popped a hen, followed by 3 more, then 1 jake, and then a big old boy. Those male birds where all puffed up,heads bright blue, and the hens acted like they wern't even there.
My 15 yr old will get his chance to fill his second tag, come Saturday.

Youngest was done by 7:15 this morning.Best show on earth today, had 5 long beards all within 50 yds by 7:00.They where all fired up.double.triple and even some quad gobbles.Hadn''t seen this many birds in quite awhile.
Can't wait until Wednesday.

Any one do any good this weekend? I saw several birds and got lots of gobbles but the toms are still henned up. Sure was fun to get out and get back to hunting.

I've hunted my ass off the past week. It seems that day-by-day the Toms are slowly starting to budge. Like you, I've seen tons of birds, and they're responding to calls, but they just weren't interested enough to commit yet. I think this week should be a different story.

A couple jacknuts from Arkansas had a really bad day today. Lost their guns, a few thousand bucks in fines, and loss of hunting privledges... All for a stupid bird that was so "precious" that they just HAD to shoot him out the truck window on private posted ground. They must do it often because they were using buckshot. Kudos to the RCPD and KDWP for throwing the book at these jerks.:10sign::D

The bird was in a field that I have permission to hunt with my daughter. The officers were particularly tough on the poachers due to the safety issue of not knowing who might be in the field.

Just a question to the peanut gallery... If you were out turkey hunting and a car pulls up and starts shooting... What would you do? If you were in their line of fire, would you shoot back?

depends on where I was at.Most of my trees are at least 150 yds from the road.IF I was working a big tom,and they cut loose from the road,I would probally let one loose up in the air.then hit the dirt.
I have a friend that was useing a B-mobil last year, and some assh____'s pulled up and shot at it with a .22.Talk about scary.Ever since then we won't use a full body decoy anywhere it can be seen from the road.

Glad to hear they're getting "theirs'." Turkey poaching is a big deal around here for some reason. Not sure why they don't buy a tag and do it the right way. My experience w/ turkey hunting is that its relatively easy and finding folks that will let you shoot them is much easier than finding private places to hunt other game. Besides, our public lands are full of 'em. Whatever, some people just don't think.

Oh, if I was w/ my kids I'd just take cover. By myself, no question I'd fire one in their direction while using a tree for cover!

I really have no idea what I would do. When I used to goose hunt more often, my buddies and I talked about it some after there were a couple incidents when goose hunters got shot by poachers. The general consensus of the group was that it would be appropriate to return fire, especially since goose hunters tend to lay out in the decoys.

In real life, I don't know... Dads will go to any length to protect their kids and caution and good judgement get tossed out the window when your kids are in harm's way. I'm thinking I will find a different place to take my daughter hunting this season. I shouldn't have to do that, but it's probably the best idea for an overprotective dad...

Stupid poachers...

RoosterTim, sorry I hijacked your thread with a negative spin. Didn't mean to spoil the party.

The birds have really been gobbling around home. I did my best hen imitation the other morning just for laughs, which isn't real convincing, but I got a couple toms to gobble back.

Toad not a problem. I had a run in with some out of staters' this weekend. Two trucks from Arkansas and one from Mississippi hunting walk-in but sneaking into private land with out permission. I caught one truck on my Grandpa's land hunting with out permission and watched as the Mississippi guys road raped a gobbler across the road from where I was set up. I call the stop poaching hot line on the guys and told the warden where they were staying and the license plate number of all three trucks. I don't understand why a person would drive a thousand miles to hunt and then pull a stunt like that with a chance to get arrested over a turkey. Isn't Arkansas and Mississippi some of the best turkey states in the nation?

Shot my first of the year yesterday pm.Decent bird,19 lb,9.5" beard,3/4 spurs.
What makes this special, this is the first time that all 3 men in the family have shot Toms.
Unfortunately,my boys where not with me yesterday(work and track practice).
This old boy walk into the pasture from the south, and from the time I first saw him,he was doing the chicken in 5-6 min.He fast walked 150 yards, didn't make a sound, except spitting and druming. No gobbles, but thats the way it has been this year.Very quite birds.
It's amazing,no matter how long you have hunted these birds, you still learn something every trip out.
Sorry no pictures on this one,but if I get the bird that I'm really after, then I will post some of him.
Good luck.

ATTA BOY JOE !!!!!!!!!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I love the Spring. Besides upland hunting, the crappie spawn and Spring turkey are my next passions! Not only does it relieve me of bird shooting depression, but it transitions nicely into the summer. I feel sorry for you married folk in the summer. Booze, bikinis, and um... more booze. :D

And where are those pics Joe?
