What is the tradition and legacy of an upland bird hunter? What sets us apart from waterfowlers, Big game hunters, and trappers?

The ancient, primal desire to interact with a dog in order to accomplish a task.

well put

the appreciation of dog work, the colors of pheasant country, the good walks with friends, the road trips to new places, and the visits to old haunts.

it's like you read my mind. the only thing you left out is meeting new people along the way:thumbsup:.

Absolutly nothing. One in the same. All out door lovers, dogs either way. Dont matter if it is coon dogs to pointers. And trappers, well they enjoy it too and help us all.;)

I think you make a good point. Maybe because I hunt upland and waterfowl? This goes for everyone I hunt with. Deer and turkey too. A few trap. I don't know of anyone around here that only does one:confused:

It's all sacred to me. It wouldn't be out of the question to hunt deer in the morning/evening, chase upland birds, small game and jump ducks in the afternoon all in the same day. Using a Chessie and a upland dog or two also in the same day.

That's how it is. All this talk about hunters just doing one or the other is foreign to me. Like I said before I don't know anyone that does just one:confused:

I left out shooting and smell of gunpowder, being outside in nature. Anticipation of making a good shot when the whiring wings occur. Etc. etc. It is all good! Some of it is in the genes as well!

Not much sets any hunter apart other than equipment and attire.
There are good and bad folks hunting upland birds, waterfowl, so-called big game and...trapping.
Blanket thumbs-up because of labels rather than actions taken and decisions made is a large and ignored problem....especially on the Internet boards.

Tradition is found in each activity and in Upland waaaay past pheasants.

Any legacy is up for grabs at this point.....sometimes, all hunters fail to look far enough ahead or past their own desires.
Any legacy requires unselfishness, an understanding of what habitat diversity delivers, consideration toward the future other than by the game organization road and critter concern at the covert level....and hunters of any description can not do it alone on any scale that matters.
Again, any legacy is up for grabs today.

While I do agree with most of you saying that most of us don't hunt one particular type of game. I do have to say though that there is something about hunting upland game that is different. Maybe it just is to my because I happen to be a younger hunter compared to alot of people on this board, and the majority of my friends hunt. Whether it be deer, turkey, or waterfowl. However I can only seem to think of one person in my age group that will even think about walking the field for some pheasants. I feel that alot of people out there are out to just to get the biggest buck, or the most banded mallards. And I feel alot of it has to do with television and whats popular. Now don't get me wrong I am in no way bashing other types of hunters. I myself do a lot of water fowl hunting and wouldnt mind getting a big buck. Just my two scents :)
