Tough, or just nuts?

Um, no...and though I don't like it, it is rather impressive

The "owner" obviously considers the dog an expendable tool. He is also an ass, in my humble opinion. No way would I put my dog in harm's way like that. The dog is definitely first-rate & tough. The owner doesn't even remotely qualify for similar praise.

I agree with Koja 48 it seems to me the owner looks at it like I can always get a new one if something bad happens and that's not personally how I feel toward my dog. Don't get me wrong very impressive reterives but I just could not put my dog in that type of situation and feel good about myself.

Since Labrador has a huge coastline, I assume the breed was developed for exactly what the video shows. Awesome sea duck hunting and dog work. I noticed the dog was relaxed and composed at all times. I see nothing amiss with what this dog was asked to do.

I think this is a little beyond what I would expect my dogs to do. I don't think I can make a judgement of the amount of love or admiration the handler had for his dog based on a three minute video. I try not to make those kind of judgements. Years ago I would river hunt ducks in late december. Many times I had a lab swim 100 yards or so down river to pick up a duck in a icy heavy current. If someone would have watched it they might think I didn't care for my dog either. I agree with Britchaser. When I hunted the river my lab's were big bruisers of 80+ lbs. Thick and strong. Mine now is built for the upland. 65+lbs solid muscle. Those dog's looked pretty tough.

You're right carp, we can't/shouldn't attempt to judge the owners.

Why would anyone even bother with conditions like this?

There are much more reasonable places/times to hunt ducks with your best friend. Unless there is something I don't understand here, I think it's "nuts".

I saw enough to judge the owner & I'll do it again. The "POS" registered in another post summed it up quite well.

Wow

Wow is about all I can say, the last clip all I could think is how I wouldn't have been able to watch my hunting buddy struggle to get back on dry land without helping but then again I have no clue what training the owner has done or previous experiences he has had which built his confidence to place his dog in such a situation. Anyways at the end of the day it's not for me and my buddy.

Dog's a beast and in great shape. The owner might be a dick who doesn't care about his dog or he might know exactly what his dog is capable of and careful not to push the limit. The dog wasn't exactly drowning.

Rather see that then the thousands of fat untrained dogs that are owned by losers who shouldn't have a hunting dog.

Im not surprised at the comments but I must remind you that real Labs came from Labrador.
Go look at it on a map!!

This is what Sea Duck Hunting IS for the most part, not for feint of heart.
If you Love your dogs too much, dont hunt them, there are dangers inherant with it. From heat stroke to hypothermia and lots in between.

Id almost guarantee that dog is well fed, loved and cared for or else he couldnt nor wouldnt make those retrieves, he loves his work, same as police K9s love theirs.

This is a Small Munsterlander doing a pretty treacherous River retrieve. Dog and bird made it to shore btw.

Risk/reward

Putting my dog in a unpredictable tide that is crashing the rocks is something I wouldn't do. The dog looks like he is having a good time and knows what it is doing. I've had dogs sidelined from things like barbwire cut, stretched ligament, puncture wounds from corn/cattails, I felt guilty enough from those things. The force of the water could cause a massive injury if it went sideways probably even death or drowning. It didn't look like the hunters had any way to help the dog out if he couldn't' get back in. Were these guys speaking French? Looks pretty stupid!
