The rarest of quail

He still eludes me after 5 seasons of religious quail hunting. What quail am I talking about? The limit quail, the tenth. I harvested 9 birds this morning (and missed a lot more than that) but redemption after being skunked three days straight in Susanville feels very good.

 That's a rowdy looking bunch of Springers you got there! Them quail never stood a chance.

What is the grass doing being green this time of year, where is the snow, and why aren't you freezing your fanny off :coolpics:

Snow? What's snow? That stuffs for the mountains and BTW it was 28deg this morning, brrrr!:D

I thought you were talking about masked bobwhites! I celebrate ANY quail here, 1-8!

Ah yes, the masked Bob. They should have once in a lifetime draws at Bosque del Apache for a pheasant/ masked Bob hunt. Limit the quail to maybe 2 birds and sell a couple tags per year. I would put in for that.

If you quail hunt in Mexico below Arizona, hunters find some in the Sonoran desert, kinda like the desert bighorn, or jaguars, in availability, but they are included in the bag.

Nine birds is plenty. Nice work!

I agree, 10 is an arbitrary number set by a man behind a desk many years ago. The fact is the dogs and I had more than enough leg under us and knowledge of a few more coveys but I thought to myself "why?". These are my special birds and each covey has its own name, they'll be waiting the next time the dogs deserve a lot of birds under their noses.

A couple years ago, my son and I went out on a quail hunt. Ace was really on his game that day. We found a couple of coveys and Ace was nailing all the singles as well. My son was nearing a limit and said. "the way Ace is going we could kill all these birds, we have enough for today". So we picked Ace up and got him off the singles and headed home. Pretty proud of my son.

Steve,

Sounds like you have instilled the values all of us sportsmen should posses in your son.:10sign:

You guys would have loved it yesterday. The last covey (not sure if it's one big covey or two smaller ones) must have close to 70-80 bird's and they were spread evenly over about 10 or so acres feeding. They were being unusually cooperative and holding very tight in the brush and weeds. I think those 2 setters of yours could have had some outstanding work on those birds.

A big covey of bobs is 20 birds. I think the dogs and I might blow a fuse if we saw a covey of 80 birds ;)

I'm sure you could gather yourself enough to figure it out. The fun ones are after the covey is broken up and you think you're working singles only to have 6 or more birds come out one at a time out of a small bush.

Yes that's the ticket. When that many flush at the same time it's hard to pick one out before they are back on the ground.

Nice pic's and great bag 9 birds, I'd be happy with that any day.

Robert, nice shooting, looks like you redeemed yourself!!

I shot pretty well but my brother put on the worst shooting clinic I've EVER seen. And he's usually the crack shot of the two of us.

must be nice having that density of quail in the brush.I suppose those our exactly "California quail" since this is the California page.or are they valley quail,or are they the same thing? do you have all 4 dogs in the field at the same time?nice pictures!where's all the white stuff?

Yes, valley or Ca quail are one in the same. Usually we only run 2 dogs at a time but if we are feeling very brave sometimes we run all 4 at once. It gets kinda crazy with 4 dogs though I won't lie and the two pups still have a lot to learn. White stuff? What frost?:D It doesn't snow here in the valley, I have to head up the mountain to see that stuff.
