The rarest of quail

some where i read that valley quail are the most prolific of quail ,laying the largest clutches of eggs of all american sub species.i 'm told they've been stocked in Wash.,idaho, and even in the country of Chile due to there adaptabilty.looks like fun,i suppose the season goes to february .

Yeah it runs through next weekend and then we are done.:( Last season was amazing, I saw chicks on the ground starting at the end of May and on dove opener (Sept 1) there were golf ball sized fluff balls running through the vineyards. We had at least 3 and possibly 4 hatches that year and coveys up to a hundred birds weren't just things of dreams, they were out thereto be found. The most chicks iI've seen with a pair of birds that year was 14  and it wasn't uncommon to see 3 different aged broods following a two pairs of quail. Given the right weather their numbers can really explode.

I almost stepped on a hen last year sitting a nest. Even after she flushed at my feet it took me a while to find her nest, by my best count without disturbing her nest she was sitting 15 eggs.

" i was quail hunting in a vineyard", really? you said that out loud ,huh?
just kidding,that's cool really:rolleyes:

Quail hunting is almost immpossible in the vines, at least with a fushing dog. All they have to do is run a row or two over and flush and you'll never get a shot. A pointer might be able to pin some singles out there but unless they fly straight down the row you're in again no shot.:( Pass shooting doves in the vines is good sport though as long as you have a dog who marks birds well.
