The perfect dog breed

What turned you on to your current or past dog's breed and what is that breed's traits. In other words, why did you go with one breed over another? Just trying to find out more about all the different breeds of bird dogs and maybe help some other people out too.

For me it was a desire for a versatile dog in the field and a good companion at home. I chose the British line over the American line because of a calmer temperament, which has been true to all that is said.

For me it's chocolate lab. I hunt alot of cattails and other heavy ground like that and they never give up. Made other breeds look silly. There easily trained ,kids play with them all the time and no problem. Duck hunting they can handle river currents and the cold mornings. For what I hunt it's the dog I need.

German Shorthaired Pointer.. and never will pick out another breed. Ive had Black Labs, had english setters, had a husky.. (non hunting dog) but the GSP has won me.

my fav

an eng pointer i love how there tailcracks when moving i like quick snappy movements ,ground covered! You can range them way out if you want depending on cover and my fav part of the ep is the straight up tail, i like how they are tough dont have to pick cockel burrs just no maintenence most dogs NOT ALL will have there feet in the air after 2 3 hours again tough is the main reason and style!

GSP's for me as well. Not really one reason other than the overall versatility of the dog. I have had labs, spaniels, etc. but fell in love with my first GSP and just like the heck out of them.

This will come as no shock to many of you, I am a Brittany man. I have been for along time. I have been saying 40 years for a while. I just did the math and it is now 50+ years. As many of you know Tony is 10 years old. He will be 11 come 1 (one) September. I am thinking ahead to the time, where he cannot hunt for me anymore. For he is really showing his age at times. I will be getting another Brit for they are the only dog for me........Bob

GSP's. Had an English, much too wound, and ended up drowning.

I have two GSP's and love them to death. I think they are the most personable dog on the planet.

No way Bob say it ain't so ......:p

hey bob, you ever had problems with running your brit in to a cockelburg ridden field? i know brits have a med length hair.. GSP are short and rarely get those. my parent's english setter gets them all the time and pain to get out when they are tangled in the hair really well.

Love Chesapeake Bay Retievers. as far as drive and determination there are a win win for me.

I picked the Vizsla because of it's size, low maintenance of the short coat and the looks. We have two now and both have been great with our kids and they are great in the field and the house. My wife and I say we would never get a different breed.

Birdman; as you can see I keep Tony pretty well clipped down for hunting season. He is very easy to overheat. The only place I can get burrs is in that front hackle. But there are not many out here.

Mr Hyde, I have had Brittany's for so long I don't know how to act with other dogs. I almost forgot Tony is enjoying a cigar after a hard day in the field and a bath......Bob

Bob, my new Britt, Elle, was bred to have a short coat. She has a little fathering behind her rear legs but that's about it. Totally different than my other Britt that is quite woolly and needs to be trimmed. When you starting looking for a new pup keep that in mind.

For me it is an English Springer Spaniel, the passion and drive they show out in the field is second to none, and then when you come home they are just as comfortable and relaxed as you are. I love all the breeds, but for me I will always have a Springer!

I have hunted with Springer's Ken they are a hard working dog. I have always had a soft for them, but the Brittany has really captured my heart.

Birdman, I understand that, we cannot be all the same, otherwise the world would stop going around.......Bob

Can't beat a GSP in my book. The drive, stamina, tracking ability and personality are top notch. Just so driven to succeed in your eyes and will quit at nothing to do so. Awesome around kids and so smart as well. GSPs for me from here on out.
