The next "New" used truck

I have a 2001 F150 4x4 super crew with 225,000 miles on it.

It has been a great truck, but it is showing its age, and I am not sure how much longer I want to go before replacing it.

So I have started thinking about what I would like to get next.

I would like a little better mileage if I can get it. But I want a 4x4. crew cab (4 doors).

Thinking about something in the 2010 - 2012 range with reasonable miles on it.

Do I go with a diesel, Eco boost, ..... ?

What do you guys like? Doesn't have to be a Ford, but I sure like the one I have.

I like F150's too. I'm on my third, a 2011 Lariat Supercab with the 5.0L V8 and 6 speed transmission. That new tranny is sweet and helps gas milage a lot. Mine has the Off Road pkg, max towing pkg (3.73) and off road tires too, so its not built for getting the best milage but for towing a Kubota, boat and off road use hunting and fishing. Still it does 17-18 mpg around town and 20-21 on highway on cruise. And rides like a Cadillac used to ride.

I hear about many problems with the ECOs and no better milage either. That 5 liter Ford engine is proven; the jury is out on the ECO.

NB

It really just depends on taste. I have an 05 gmc sierra z71, 5.3l with oversized off road tires that turns in 17 city and 20-21 highway even with 215+k miles. My brothers 2014 gmc clocks in maybe a mpg or two more and my dads with the 6.2l will do 16-20 with 412hp. All three are great trucks with rear lockers that will get us way back on the forestry roads we quail hunt from in the high country.

I have an 07 GMC sierra with the 6.6 diesel, crew cab with the full sized box. It is getting 21 average milage. That is pretty thrilling to me as I also have a 1987 one ton dually crew cab with a 454 that gets about ten mpgs.

05 diesel. 200,000. 17mpg average. Just getting broke in.:)
I have spent a BIG part of my life in that beat up old pop up.

I'm about a year behind you on the vehicle search. Just need to get our youngest out of daycare and into school... Let us know what you get and if you are happy with it.

I daydream about a new F-150 also, but I also sometimes think a full-size truck is overkill for 99% of what I do. I'm glad I have a sturdy and capable tow vehicle when I'm pulling my big V-boat, or even just pulling the UTV trailer... But it gets old having to unload the bed all the time or risk having my stuff get rained on. And I average 14 mpg...

I dunno. I really like the look of the Toyota FJ. I could see myself adding 150K miles to a good used FJ. Sometimes I think I would like a 4-door Wrangler, but I worry about the vehicle's longevity.

I'll probably end up going back to an F-150 in the end. I can't really complain about the last two I've had. They were solid and gave me very little trouble. It's more vehicle than I need most of the time, but it's nice to have towing power when you need it.

I keep bouncing around between getting one more year out of my 2001, and getting something used in the 2011 range.

Still have a son in college.

Ford all the way baby !

Setter, I would definatley go with Ecoboost over Diesel. The Diesel option alone will set you back 4k or more and that's a lot of fuel you can buy for that amount, not to mention Diesel fuel is more expensive. Even if you tow, the 3.5 Ecoboost is more than enough. I get 21 mpg highway with my 2013 in the summer months. Brother-in-law pulls a ski boat and hauls an ATV in the bed with his and gets 16 mpg highway.

Unless you tow something very heavy it's a no-brainer for Ecoboost.

Now.....

If you wanted to splurge and buy new, the 2015 F-150 will come with second option for a Ecoboost engine (2.7 litre) along with the 3.5 litre. The 2.7 will easily gain you a few more miles per gallon and still have plenty of power. Without seeing the ratings on them yet I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't get 26 mpg highway. The 2015 F-150 will also be 750 lbs lighter than previous models, so that alone should improve gas mileage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejvamI6cp04

I would go with the ecoboost. I plan to buy one when I get home in a week or so. Get on a few ford forums and see what they are complaining about. I have only really seen some condensation troubles which are easily cured by an air dam of sorts I think. I have went back and forth over the gas vs diesel issue myself and I think the that while diesels run for a long time the maintenance of a diesel is quite costly. This is just my two cents.

I don't blame you for hesitating to get a new vehicle. It's hard to get rid of something that still works... and is paid for!

I put a new toolbox on mine about a year ago so now I feel like I gotta get my money's worth out of the toolbox also. Haha... But I looked over at Little Apple Toyota on my way to work and they have a green FJ...

Hopefully my old F150 goes another year without any major repairs, and then I'll have a nice long grace period where I'm looking, but don't NEED a new vehicle. When you have that kind of flexibility, you can wait for the right deal to come along.

Setternut not sure which package you would be looking at but I just got the fx4 with the ecoboost and let me tell you that thing is sweet. I was able to average 19.2 mpg round trip. This could have been better had the speeds been less, I was going about 80-85 mph most the time. This truck is more than roomy on the inside with the supercrew.

Thanks for the info.

I will be getting another SuperCrew for sure. The full back seats are a must in my family.

I would like to milk one more year out of my current truck. But I am keeping an eye open for something just in case.

Good deal. Nothing wrong with getting your monies worth. I actually kept my older ford. I will tell you though that on my trip eastern ks was where I had my worst mpg because of the increased speed and the hills all of which were my fault.

I have 226,400 on it right now. Put new tires on it last summer, if not for that $1000 I would likely have pulled the trigger on another truck.

I have not heard anyone that has an Ecoboost that doesn't like it.
