Shell Brand

No one would ever find one of my B&P's in the field because they all go in my vest after shot.

LOL yup, its not about the shell. B&p's work and every thing out there works. It's all about the shooter. Can you shoot, or can't you.

PLease its not about ammo or the gun you shoot with. It's about your ability to shoot.

I'm sorry but I get tired of this argument. It is getting OLD.

I agree jmac but I think the question was what do you find most on the ground. My brother is questioning purchase of a semi cause whenever he shoots I look over to see if he's looking for his empties. Never give up a quail covey by leaving empties laying around.

Yes Qh,

I can always find my empties after I've found my birds.

I see more Federals than anything else. My favorite is Fiocchi 3" #6. It produces a very good pattern in my gun with IC.

Reload my own hunting rounds with 5 shot. Bought quite a few cases of remington shells when I found them on sale for $2.79 a box...about 10 years ago. Still have a couple cases left. Use them mostly when I go quail hunting. Had bad luck with Winchester not firing, threw them out.

In 16ga I like Federal....Purple rules!!

Give me the Wing-Shok 1.25oz # 6's or #5's really shnockers them.

I would put the HeviShot shells up against anything in terms of
energy and consistency.........

Hevi shot do work good but consistent it ain't. They change load recipes and shot type more than most hunters change there underware.

Winchester xtended range is just as good maybe better and it can usually be had cheaper. Remington hd was awesome too but they stopped making it.

I still prefer lead though when I can use get away with it after duck season closes and I'm not hunting waterfowl production areas. Remington, fiocchi, kent, winchester, federal it doesn't much matter.

I always liked Remington power piston Extra long range, Nitro Magnum and Winchester Super X or Double XX Magnum years ago. I bought a bunch of them in 16ga from a guy this summer. Always liked Remington ammo the best back then with Winchester a close second. Federal had their issues but are much better and near the top today. I like a manufacturer who keeps the shells color coded like Federal. Brown 10ga... Red 12ga..purple 16ga...yellow 20ga. Remington has green 10, 12 and 16. Winchester has red 10, 12 and 16..also black 3.5" 10ga and 12ga. I have seen shells get mixed up, tipped over on the dash/floor/seat of the truck, on the bottom of the blind/boat, Etc. I have seen 3.5" 12ga get fired in the 10ga gun more then once when the shells are the same color. You can lay them side by side and not hardly tell the difference. In the heat of the hunt one doesn't need this danger....that's why I buy a lot of federal ammo now. I have several of every gauge gun and a family that can have 4-5 different gauge guns on the same hunt. People in and out of vehicles numerous times, shells in boxes on the seat, dash, floor, Etc. Ya..Federal has it right....I wish they all did.

I'm not partial to any one brand of shell, and use several variants in the course of a season. Most hunters I see seem to use mostly Federal and Winchester, but more and more are starting to shoot Fiocchi. The Rem Nitro's are great shells, but I don't see many being used or on the ground.

I'm with you on its the indian not the arrow theory!!

However after almost thirty year's of rooster killing and seeing possibly thousands of rooster's hit the ground i have formed some opinion's.

1) shells have improved dramatically(maybe just the shells i have chose to use and the people around me are using)
2)the deadest rooster's typically come from being hit with 4 and 5's and a big premium shell like a Kent Fastlead, Fiochhi Golden Pheasant, Federal Prarie Storm or Wing shok (I haven't used B and P's on Pheasant but i have shot a ton of live pigeons with them a they are a superior shell)

the best thing you can do to help your odds besides more target shooting is buy a good shell

I have seen roosters shot with everything from a trap load with 8's to a 2 Ounce 3 incher with 2's, somewhere in the middle might be best for most.

this would be my top three choice's

Kent Fastlead
Fiochhi GPX
Fiochhi Golden Pheasant

I like black cloud #3's and also close range in first barrel. They work so well I haven't tried hardly any other steel. I like hevi shot as an alternative when I find them on sale. Anyone tried speedball from hevi shot?

I can't tell you how they do on pheasant, but I shot ducks last week for the first time using Kent fast-steel #2. Pass shooting at 25-40 yards, modified choke. Three shots, three ducks.

I used steal black-cloud #4's the next day and shot a teal that fell in the water and fluttered around a few minutes before expiring.

Use the HeviShot shells as opposed to anything STEEL for your
pheasants on Federal Land where non-tox loads are required.
It is a superior shell to anything steel or lead.
