Record nitrate levels in Raccoon, Des Moines rivers threaten metro-area tap water

No problem Iowa. IF you can clean it, pump it downstream to other municipalities and help create the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. When will we have enough? I have challenged on this site for singling out Iowa with the worst water quality in the U.S. How bout now?

Amazing to see that they allow the nitrates to be dispersed back into the rivers. Now that's the EPA for you!

nitrates have been leeching into water supplies for years, not just iowa...a lot of rural wells carry high nitrate levels, many folks in rural communities only drink bottled water.....this is a huge problem.

sound like a great opportunity for more targeted CCRP in the way of filter strips and buffer water sources from runoff. Less CRP acres overall and higher rents to get it in the ground. You still need a sales force to promote it and sell it which the govenrment is not doing. PF fills a role here.

Ohio is a mess right now also. Toxic algae blooms mostly run off from fields. Lake Erie has dead zones in the western basin and that is having an impact on walleye frye. We have had several inland lakes that have been closed durring the summer due to the algae.

If the government would stop giving away free money that pays the way for so many to farm, spray, go work somewhere else all summer. Maybe they would have to stay home and cultivate their crops and earn a farmers life. Many, if not most know what the damage is that they are doing. They just choose to do nothing about it, unless the government implements some kind of restrictions on the use of these chemicals.

Nobody wants big brother involved, yet instead of voluntarily doing the right thing. They will keep poisoning the ground and water until that exact thing has to happen.

It's like the water situation in places like Kansas. They tell them the aquifer is going dry but farmers continue to pump water out of giant wells up to 24" in size and they say, unless others stop..I won't either. Then they wonder why the government has to get involved.

knock, Knock puddin head

I do wish the government would get out of ag, but that is not going to happen unless the government bellies up. However cultivation is not without problems. I grew up farming that way and there was a lot of erosion and now we know what tillage does to the biological life of the soil so it is a choice of the lesser of the two evils. There is a better choice, but it takes time and an open mind and a willingness to think outside the box.

There is a direct correlation between high nitrate levels in the environment certain types of cancer. Rates are high in farming regions and among workers with high exposure rates such as those who work on golf courses and in agriculture.

I think part of the problem with these kinds of effects is that most average americans are not well informed about the truth or significance of the problem. I recently read a report on toxic algae blooms in Ohio Lakes and Lake Erie which reported that the problem was related to low oxygen levels due to high organic and phosphate levels and higher water temperatures. The report went on to describe how farming was not really the problem because farmers wouldn't over apply phosphates and fertilizer because it costs them allot of money.

I think it's pretty obvious that using herbicides to kill everything except one mono crop which is completely harvested leaving nothing but a barren earth landscape over large portions of ground in the winter and spring is going to have a significant effect on run off soil water nutrients and content dumping into rivers and aquifers. A return to sustainable farming practices which do not leave large portions of the land barren and works with a wide range of plant and biological organisms is paramount for the future health of our planet and life on earth.

Most Iowa farmers, like their brethren in a dozen other farming states are like Joe:

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JOE REPUBLICAN

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of coffee, he
takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joes employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union.

If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

Its noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.

Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. Limbaugh keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.

Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

And that's the problem, folks.

I assume you are bored with nothing better to do than insult people. You might try spending your time doing things that are constructive.

I havnt seen the details yet but there is a bill in legislation now that will allow the Ohio DNR (i take it their talking about wildlife officers) to cite the farmer if there is too much run off from the fields, along with other laws. I was schocked that the farm bureau really isnt fighting it. The only comment i've read from them was along the lines of "we told them if they didnt change this was coming". I dont know much about how it happens but when I see them planting right up to the ditch there has to be run off entering the water that way.

This ought to be good. What happens if they get a six inch downpoor? No matter what you have done. 3 foot tall CRP will have runoff. Hopefully there will be some common sence but I seldom see that.
