I have two labs, and feed them pro plan sport. But the price has gone up to $48 a bag. Thinking about going to Diamond any input?

I switched from proplan chicken to diamond naturals chicken a few years ago. No complaints. The dogs eat it well, and have normal poops. The price of the Diamond naturals has been creeping up slowly as well, but I guess that is true of most things...

I know a lot of guys on this site feed Diamond. My only concern with Diamond is the number of recalls they have had in the past years. And yes, other dog food manufactures have recalls also but Diamond seems to have more than the rest.

your question is very vague as there are a ton of Diamond products out there including a lot of co packing / private label brands manufactured by Diamond.

These threads will always produce guys for and against every brand out there. If it works for your dogs and your budget then make the switch

I have visited and seen both factories, Meta, Mo, and St. Louis area. I am certain the production plants are as good as any other. I fed Diamond for years, and Purina Products, in higher grades, they are both great. There is some contamination from Chinese ingredients which even the FDA cannot pinpoint, but they acknowledge it's there! Diamond manufacturers Blue Buffalo and Wellness as a contract laborer, different ingredients, but the flow down the same chute. Looks like the problem plant is the old ANF plant in Alabama. I don't think changing variety or brands insulates you at all. They can all be contaminated as can your Chinese, American, Mexico, or other human food. Hamburger anyone? One inspector, thousands of containers, and packing plants, The consolation prize, is you and your dog's death defying sickness, will probably save somebody else, after the recall.

So diamond would work great for duck dogs and more affordable then Purina?

you might want to check out pro pac adult mini. I have fed this for 3 years now with no problems. I had fed Diamond Hi energy not impressed at all I had very poor results.

Contact purina or your local feed store that you get it from and find out what day the rep is at the store or if they are. With that said, Pro-Plan is the only purina feed I would feed to a dog.

If you have a petsmart or Orchelins (sp) a rep may be at one or both of the stores on a weekend day. What I am getting at is most of the time they have 5 and 10 dollar off coupons for the feed. Combine that with a sale that any store is having on Purina and you can get it for a good price. I normally pay 32-35 dollars a bag if I am careful to watch for sales and combine the coupon.

Being around retievers for my entire life and being a life long waterfowler it is my opinion that a strictly duck dog does not need the calories that a hard working English Pointer does for example. Most hunting for a duck dog as you know, is idle time sitting in the blind and only burning calories to keep warm which in my opinion is not nearly what a hard working pointing dog will burn in a days hunt.

Diamond would work very well for a waterfowl dog. Iams is another feed that is very good. They make a high protein feed as well but can't get it around here.

Thank you sir. I will let you know how diamond works.

dog food is like dog breeds.....everyone has their favorites. do your homework and pick one of each and enjoy your pup.

Food

I feed TOTW, Missing Link, table scraps, vegetables, yogurt, low sodium chicken soup on her food when I hunt her. She seems like she's doing pretty good. No stomach problems and a ton of energy. Coat is really thick and smooth. Hope it keeps working out for her.

Diamond dog food with table scraps seems to work well for my dogs. No more shedding or itchy ears since I've added the table scraps into their diet:). My wife's dog took some time getting used to eating the scraps though. His stomach wasn't used to it. All good now:thumbsup:.

Food

Bought a bag of Nutrisource dogfood yesterday at Mounds. They had 5 bucks off a bag. It's made in Minnesota and they make Mound' s brand dogfood, so they must do a good job. Anyway, bought the chicken grain free and my dog is a lot more interested in it than the the TOTW. I tried some myself and thought it tasted better. We'll see how it goes.

Eukenuba was great duck dog food.... then like all of them they shrunk the bags and added to the cost.
Was feeding loyal to the more active one. Switched him to diamond 6 months ago, did great.2 bags ago they changed the bag and added probiotics. Man I don't know he's got the chits something terrible. If it doesn't end soon I'll be feeding something else. All dogs are different though ...give diamond a shot.
