Pheasant Off-Season Affective Disorder (POSAD)

I've got POSAD so bad. Anyone else suffering? What's the cure? Fishing? Dog cuddling? Medication?

Lol. Well, seeing hens are on their nests this time of year and working the dogs and flushing birds isn't an option, try to learn how to mimic the sound of a hen pheasant or get a pheasant call. Hit the fields and call those suckers in. You can bring them in nice and close as long as your hidden well.

It's not pheasant hunting but it's still nice to see those bad boys up close.;)

Might be a way to hunt when I can no longer trod the fields.

I have got it. It causes me to think I hear quail and pheasants when ever I go out in the field.

Only cure is some dog training, and 5 - 6 more months of recovery time.

POSAD, is also called "Why do people think about pheasants in the summer time" its more common than you think. Fishing will not cure it.

Stay focused on trying to help the summer pheasants get the best reproductive conditions available. Improve undisturbed nesting cover to increase overall chick production.
Encourage your neighbors to mover their roadsides and fields in late June. Call local farmers and ask about brood and chick sightings.
Invest in summer predator control projects and keep an eye on aerial predators.

The only cure I know of is, working on some old American muscle cars!

My attempts have been directed to rehabbing two old tin boats, a 12ft and a 14ft. The 12 was not bad, but the 14ft alumacraft had been left out in Wisconsin's weather, keel down :(, for over 17 years.

Getting there, although nothing spectacular. Now I have to learn to try and enjoy fishing. Up until now, my fishing was walking down to the crik, occasionally catching a couple of trout, then walking back up to the kitchen.

Even the worms were free.

But, looking back, I enjoyed the "rescue" work, and seeing the results of untrained labor on a gen-u-wine Wisconsin fishin' boat.

Upland or Waterfowl

I grew up upland hunting still do it love it to death, but it seems like with that and deer hunting theres no time for waterfowl. Of course I could try and fit it in, but once your a pheasant/quail hunter always it what you live for. So I don't want to take time from pheasant hunting for waterfowl. Even though my gundog is a lab I see him more excited pheasant hunting. Please give your input thanks.

I've been doing NSTRA field trials for the past 2+ months so that has helped. but now they are over until September so I'll have to find something. Weather permitting I'll be spending more time on my Harley. And of course I really should spend more time doing some things with my wife!! :)

Hey js, 1 week at a time huh! Sounds good. Whens the first trip? and where? I'm planning a week about the middle of Sept, depending on weather. Don't like it to wet or hot.
I don't have a elk license this year, I do have the general deer. You know all that time I spend elk hunting last year? Some 14 days, well:) this year I have a lot more time to chase roosters. Got some new areas I want to check out.

Right now I'm keeping very busy, but REALLY looking forward to Fall.

I plan to leverage my forced march to Florida next spring into many days afield this fall. Curse you, Walt Disney. In the meantime I have been thinking about shooting some clays and starting back to work with the hounds. Time to earn their kibble!

No Cure

There is no cure and there never will be. I have had the disorder since the age of 4. That was 48 years ago. I miss it as much today as I will October 28th at 11:55 p.m.

My best advice is realize you have it, don't try to fix it, and pray we have some ag. changes and practices, weather that give the bird a fighting chance to thrive. They will forever thrive in my mind!

Some things I do--First of all I am lucky to have a daughter that plays Varsity fastpitch softball. It keeps us very busy traveling to tournaments throughout the summer. I hit the gun club every once in a while to do some trap shooting. Unless it's really hot. I frequent the sporting good and gun shops on myway home from work looking for anything I can't live without. I usually pick up a box a shells each time to avoid the bulk purchase. I'm lucky enough to have some acreage and raise pheasants. I do some training with my pointers and a remote bird launcher. I take all four of my dogs to the lake and swim them for excersise especially during the dog days of summer. I do own a boat and fish but don't enjoy it any where near as much as being out with my dogs bird hunting. And almost every Sunday I get up long before the rest of my family and look for anything bird hunting related. Which is how I came upon this site this morning. I particulary like looking for new destinations and torturing my buddies into planning a trip. However none of them have a wife as great as mine. You know the rest of the story.

There is no cure. You have to find distractions. I have been researching and doing some reloading of shells for the fall. Take the field guns to the range. Shot four rounds of clays with my 16 ga Sterlingworth last week. Sorted out the pictures from last November in SD. Bought a new orange hat. Its not much but it takes the mind off. Our group just hit the crossover point last month. We always go to SD the first week of November; seven months down and five to go. Less than 90 days to the dove opener warm up. Its the little things that keep me going.

I took up fly fishing. Still get to walk around like pheasant hunting. It ends in September and Phez season starts mid October.

Tbear: What are the regs on that? I have wanted to try my fly rod out on something besides bass and panfish but am a little shy about dragging a lawyer out to the stream with me.

Besides, bass and northern on a fly rod can be a heck of a good time!

The wife was reading over my shoulder and suggested painting the living room. Gonna have to start updating my comments on the laptop in the basement... under a tarp... late, late at night...
