PA Pheasant Season

Lady was relentless today and had four solid points and several early flushes. Overall Lady worked up 3 roosters and 6 hens. I kept missing, finally I was able to bag a hen...

Congrats on the successful hunt.

My day started out by watching two guys walk out a wooded area that is in a safety zone. They pushed out a bunch of birds and shot a few roosters out of the safety zone. I talked to them about it and they said they didn't know it was a safety zone. I guess three signs just isn't enough. I kept working the area and the dogs found a couple of roosters in a different safety zone but I had to call them off. We hunted for a while and found a few more hens in a rooster only area. Finally the dogs had a solid point on a rooster that put a few trees between me and itself and I couldn't make the shot. I decided that was enough an went home. I'm still trying to decide about tomorrow.

We went to camp today to tie up some loose ends before deer season and get an hour or two of bird hunting in. Dugan flushed 3 hens in one of our habitat management areas and we passed on them. Later in the day while checking our stands we flushed a grouse but we didn't have our guns with!

The grouse flushed out of here, an area where we have done extensive habitat work!

This area connects to a group of evergreens. They provide a good understory!

It was a great day to be in the woods!

Those pictures have grouse writen all over them.:coolpics: Were you hunting in a rooster only area, or was it your choice not to shoot the hens?

We've run into a bad streak, didn't see a thing!

Nice pictures HollowWatcher. Looks like a nice area to hunt.

Anybody going out tomorrow? I was going to go but I think both me and the dogs need a break. I pulled something in my hip today and I don't think walking in the snow would be the best thing to do. Good luck if you get out.

Brian, I think you and the boys deserve a break, you have had a GREAT season so far! I have enjoyed all your posts and the stories they tell! You should be proud of the boys, they have kicked butt this year, just look at all the birds they found!

We are on break as well, getting excited for opening day! Do you get out?

Thanks. I think it's great that we can see pictures and hear about bird hunting across the state on here. I think we have all done well.

I'll be out on Monday close to home but I don't get too excited over deer season. I'm not sure if I'll see much since there is a large corn field still standing close to where I'll be hunting.

Good luck at your camp.

You're right guys, it's been another great season, boy where does the time go! It's nice to have a Forum to share stories with friends that share the same passion.
The opening day of deer season has always been special, although it has changed over the years. Now it's more for the tradition than anything else.

Then it will be the second season of upland, the freezer is more than full, so it's a great time to just enjoy!

I was planning a short trip just to get out, but a family member got sick and needed help. It's going to be a long two weeks!
Good luck with the bucks!

Anybody get out on the last day?

You guys have inspired us. We hunted a large swampy area that the locals say has birds year round. We hunted for over 4 hours, didn't flush a bird. We did see tracks how ever!
Good luck with the deer season to all!

I only had about 30 minutes to get the dogs out after work before it got dark out. I quickly put on some orange and grabbed the dogs. I didn't even bother to take the gun, I just wanted to get the dogs a chance to run. They acted birdy and looked to be working some ground scent but we didn't find anything. I know they were happy to be out even if it was just for a little. Not sure if I can get out before Friday or not but I plan to hunt Friday and Saturday. Then as much as a can over the next two weeks and I really want to try for grouse.

It felt great to be walking behind the dogs again today:)

Hey, I was waiting for your posts!:) I know what you mean about just getting out. I had Dugan sitting in the front seat of my truck, we were just out taking a ride. We both saw a nice field with some cover and I don't know who got more excited. Only let him run for a few minutes but he was happy. It gets dark to early, I think I may have to come down with the mysterious bird flu!
