PA Pheasant Season

A friend of mine took the morning off from work and he came out with me to do a little pheasant hunting. He brought his 9 year old daughter to walk along. The birds were running and we had a group of 6 birds flush wild without a shot. We continued to hunt and the dogs found some singles and another group of 4 or 5 birds. After an hour he had two birds to take home to clean before work. I decided to head to another area and we moved some birds out of the hedgerows but only one offered a marginal shot that I missed. The dogs did have another point on a rooster in some switchgrass that I dropped. The dogs found a couple more hens and that was good enough for the day. We ended up moving about 25 birds today but I'm sure some were the same hens we found earlier. I hunted gamelands and co-op lands today. I do hope to hunt in the snow tomorrow.

Anybody else getting out this week in the snow?

That's some good hunting moving that many birds now! I didn't see any where that many and hunted long and hard. Dugan was on the same rooster three different times and I finally bagged him, the only other bird came near the end of the day, so I saw two and bagged two, another great day to be out! I did see and flush 3 woodcock and a nice buck. I'll see if I can get some pictures up.
Yes we will be out in the snow for sure!

Nice going guys! I was out for a couple of hours after work with out the use of a dog and didn't see anything, but still was glad to get out.
I am not sure if I can get out tomorrow in the snow.
Good luck!

I waited for the rain to turn over to snow before heading out close to home. My oldest boy who is 8 wanted to walk along, so away we went. The snow sure makes the cover look different.

It wasn't long after this the dogs had a nice point. The bird held well and I knocked down the rooster. The boy makes a nice model.

We flushed a couple of hens before the dogs got birdy. I couldn't see if they were on point but two roosters flushed and I was able to hit a crossing shot. Nittany found the bird but I couldn't find Blitz. Turns out he was on point and another rooster came from the same area. It was a good hunt and Connor carried the birds the entire time.

We ended up finding 5 roosters and 4 hens on the day.

Only got out briefly was too worried about not being able to get the car out so Lady and I headed back. Better luck in the next couple of days I hope. Missed the Yukon today!

We hunted gamelands today and had a blast. Hunting in the snow was very cool but the rain before hand not so much. Dugan is having his greatest season ever and we can't can't ask for more, he has done it all this year!

When the morning started I honestly wasn't expecting much, but like Hollow said Dugan was insane. He attacked every piece of cover and was relentless. He flushed the first bird while it was pouring rain and out of some real nasty briars. The rain changed to snow and we left the much hunted fields for the woodlots, he flushed the second bird out of a very large wood pile blow down. Needless to say I'm very proud of the little guy!

Looks like you got a future hunter there Brian!

Man....you guys are deadly!!! That little Dugan is really something, all you guys have some awesome dogs, I hope when I get one he can do the same.
I looked at the conditions and didn't go, now I wish I had. Way to go guys.

PaRooster,

Thanks for the kind words. If you get your pup from good hunting stock I'm sure the two of you will get it done in the field. Sometimes I think these dogs have a passion even greater than ours.

Got a late start on Thanksgiving morning and a lot of people were already through the fields. The dogs found a rooster that I let get up and gave my father-in-law the first shot. He got some tail feathers but the bird was pretty far out when I took my shot. It kept on flying and never stopped. Later on the dogs had a nice point on a bird that ended up being winged by another hunter. Nittany brought him to me since he couldn't fly and then we ended our morning.

Did anybody else get out on Thanksgiving? Only two more days left in the early season. I may go for grouse one day but I don't have any plans yet. Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to all! I decided to give Dugan a break this morning, he's been going hard all season.Plan on going for pheasant/grouse tomorrow. It's been a GREAT season so far.

Got out today with Lady. Snow was deep and started wearing the ol pup out pretty quick. A lot of hunters out and as we arrived later in the morning I decided to take Lady through the woods. She got in to sneak mode pretty quick and soon after two hens flushed out of range.
Reaching the next road I figured we would head back in for a second pass. Soon Lady was back in creep mode and held a solid point.
I slowly walked up and after a few minutes saw the hen laying. I tried to find the best angle given the trees, all the while Lady holding solid by scent.
As you guessed planning went perfect. I sent Lady in, bird ran, flushed straight up, pull up to shoot another bird flushes to my right and I come down with a double....miss...

Saw 7 hens, 0 roosters, 2 shots, and no birds.
2 more days. Good luck all and stay safe.

P.S. If a man falls in the woods and his dog Lady is the only to hear does he make a sound...

Sounds like the early season is ending well for a lot of people. Two days left and I'm getting ready to go back out.
