PA Pheasant Season

Sounds like a good day except for Dugan getting banged up. It's always exciting when bunches of birds start flushing.

HollowWatcher,

Was Dugan easy to train? Did you get him from a local source? I've started to do some research on springers.

Dugan came from a small kennel in Bradford County but his lineage is from Hellfire Kennels. Springers are relatively easy to train and will lay it all out there in the field! They just don't hunt they get after it, when Dugan is out there he is on the attack! To top it all off they are out there hunting with YOU which I love and when you take them home they are just as happy on the couch! Make sure you are looking at field bred springers and not the show breed, they are like two different types of dogs.

Thanks Hollow,

Some great looking dogs at that website! How is Dugan this morning, did the bleeding stop? Do cuts like that happen often? Does the kennel in Bradford County often have pups?

Dugan is fine, the bleeding is stopped. Dugan get's cut's like that occasionally because of how he hunt's..he is charging feel speed into briars and thickets and get's tore up every now and then but he just loves to hunt! It was a private breeder and they don't have pups to often.

Sounds like another good day in PA for you and Dugan. Sorry to hear he got cut up but glad he is doing well today.

I took 3 guys yesterday to the preserve and we hunted some really thick stuff and Coppers eyes got worked over really good. Cleaned them up late last night but this morning when my wife went to the garage she came back in quickly and said the dog couldn't see. Here his eyes had swollen/stuck closed and took a few swipes with his paw to open them back up. All is good now.

My great plans to combine a work trip with sneaking out for a couple of half day hunts ended up completely falling through. Still ended up there for work but on a very shortened trip and didn't bring the dog as didn't think there would be enough time to make it worth it. Did get an hour last night and one this morning to be able to at least drive out and look at a couple of different areas so I at least have an idea of where they are at. Looks like my best chance to get some hunting in this year in PA will have to be in the late season.

I have not been out since Saturday's vet hunt. I hope to hunt Friday and will be out Saturday before driving down to VA to look at a pup. I will hunt next week Tuesday through Saturday.

I was out for about an hour after work. I had a bird (think it was a hen) flush wild as soon as I started walking the fields with the dogs. The dogs did point where it came from when we got to the area. My plan was to walk to an area that is small but might hold birds since the corn was just taken down. I wasn't the only one with that thought as I saw 3 hawks flying over the area and pushed two fox out when walking the cover. On the way back to the truck the dogs got bird, had an unproductive point and finally worked a bird for 10 minutes before a hen flushed. It was good to get out and see some birds. I'll be out tomorrow before going to look at a pup in VA.

Anybody else going out?

You're lucky to be able to go out after work, I was supposed to go today but things came up. We'll be out tommorrow and I have the next to weeks and a day off, all for hunting. We have had action EVERY time out and there's still a lot of hunting to be done!

I woke up to 12 degrees and got ready to pick up a friend to hunt at the gamelands. It didn't take long for Blitz to find the first bird in a thicket. The rooster flushed and my friend took a shot but wasn't able to connect. We kept working and the dogs started working a running bird. We walk around a pond and the dogs lock up in a shot grass field. We walk in and three roosters flush up. I shot at two birds but only hit tail feathers. My friend did hit one and Nittany made the retrieve. It was a beautiful site with the sun shining on the frost covered grass and branches. We moved to another area and Blitz has a point in some heavy grass. A rooster flushes and we were able to wing it. Nittany made another retrieve. We worked another area and the dogs track a bird through a food plot and pin it in the woods. I was able to drop him on one shot and Blitz made the retrieve on the last bird we found. It was a cold but beautiful day in the fields.

Wow, so many people were out this morning. It was cold, but beautiful and to avoid the people we went to a farm enrolled in the cooperative farm game program and got this beautiful rooster!

Nice going guys!

It was cold, 10 degrees but at least no wind. Like Hollow said, we hunted a Co-OP, and were rewarded with a real nice rooster, you can see how long his spurs are. We put up a couple of hens but we don't shoot them on this property. A real nice November morning! There seemed to be a load of bird hunters out at the SGLs.

Boy you guys are knocking it out of the park again. We've hunted hard the last couple of times but haven't seen a bird.
