Opening Day is upon us

I have not gotten my plan together.

Will be taking the week off next week I may take it easy this weekend and then get out more during the week.

For some reason I am wanting to go shoot a Scalie, as I have never gone after them.. I can't imagine that is would be a good year for them, after a couple years of drought, but I may still have to do it.

Good luck guys, have some fun.

save yourself some grief, scalies are runners....usually have to flush them twice to break them and hunt singles.

I think my buddy and I got lucky but the one time we got into them they didnt run. They let our dogs point them while they were getting a drink, then ran maybe 10-15 yards, we went in to flush, they flew maybe 50 yards and stayed put. Flushed them 2 more times like that -- think we got 6 birds or so then left them alone. Have one mounted in my office. Cant figure out what is more of a trophy, that or the prairie chicken to the left of my desk.

I better get off this stupid computer and get some sleep. Getting up at 4:00am:eek:, picking up my nephews and proceeding with a 10 hour drive. I can't wait, it's finally here!

I have gotten several PC pointed and shot. I consider that the pinnacle of pointing dog work in this area. I like the challenge of different birds.

So far every time I have put my dogs on new birds, they have handled them well after a little experience.

I have pretty much all of the birds in KS pointed and shot. (have not done the LPC, but...) Got to give the Scalies a try.

That's the ticket. Someday I'll trade you a Ca quail/ mtn quail hunt for a bobwhite hunt. I have some places in mind for your dogs for both but if your pup goes on point 900yds away we might be in for a world of hurt.

The Garmin Alpha with tone has been nice for turning Indy when he gets on a long line. Those long distance point are a double edge sword. ;)

Might have to take you up on that some day. I want to hunt all the quail, and after the scalies, I have to head a lot farther west for the rest of them.

Well if we planned it right and weather was good for production there are places in Ca where all 3 of our quail and chukar can be had in the same canyon. Ca is definitely the destination for mtn quail though, the other two can be found closer to home for you.

Theres about one public place where if you look you should almost be guaranteed to get into them. Lots of room to roam. My buddy and I are probably going to to this year. A long drive for us but would be even longer for you, definitely make a weekend out of it.

Those of you staying the week could be getting some great early season weather:thumbsup:

The boys got a surprise this morning when dad came home from work early to tell 'em, "There ain't no stinkin' school for them today". I hope the administrators understand and appreciate why, but if not, sorry about their luck:D

We'll stop by Rock City on our way and let the boys play. Then we'll take a wildlife tour this afternoon/evening. I hope to find a flock of turkeys to harass while it's warm Saturday afternoon.

Good luck to all of you this w/e! Don't forget to water the dogs frequently!!

Go give it a try. I've never hunted them in Kansas, but I have killed quite a few in Arizona. It's true that they love to run but they will definitely hold for a point once you break them up. I think that they are really fun and rewarding to hunt. I also think they are easier to get a point on than a prairie chicken.

I have hunted them too, often you have to flush them twice, to get them to hold...they run like hell.

My EP pointed more of those damn things last year than anything else. And when they flush they scare the hell out of you! Strange how close you can get to one and not even know its there until it flies.

I think I am going to go for it this week. Maybe go down early in the week after the opening weekend crowd has thinned out.

It sounds like you have to break them up enough to work singles. But if they are easier to point than PC but run a lot, they should be a fun challenge worth the drive.

I am going to stay around home for the weekend, may not do a lot of hunting until the weekend is over. I don't like the crowds, and I have some spots that I hunt that I would rather not have a bunch of people see me hunting ;) Quail coveys are like secret fishing holes.

Back when we were in school we used to take a week off in late November for deer season. Everyone knew where i was when i would miss the whole week of school. When i would get back everyone would ask me how the season went! Even the teachers and principle would ask!:D

best of luck to everybody.....save some for me...will be few weeks before I'm able to make it back out there.....I finished up my season on quail out there last January.....
