Old Dog Meets New Pup

Brought home our new GSP pup Jazmyn Friday. I'd been wondering how our 12 1/2 year old weim Kode would respond. Well, so far no response at all, which I guess is better than a negative response. But to now, Kode has completely ignored and walked away from Jaz. I've tried to pet both at the same time and get Kode in the mix as Jaz has been playful, but still nothing. What should I expect? Anything else I should be doing?

Give it some time, you are rushing things. They will become good friends in due time. If they were going to be enemies. It would have happened by now. The old boy will teach the pup the pecking order of the home. So a few snarls and yelps will be heard. But the pup won't even get wet. So don't push it and don't show favorites, they will get it done at their own pace.......Bob

Bobeye is right.

I just went through this the last couple of weeks, bringing home a new pup.
The older dogs were just ignoring the pup hoping that he was not going to be staying :D

Now my pup and 2.5 year old are best buddies. Now my 14 year old Gordon has mixed feelings about the pup. She will play for a while, but the pup will never stop playing :D

Don't push things, they will do fine together if you have not had a major problem yet.

One thing that help my 2.5 yo accept the pup faster was taking them for walks and runs together.

If your older dog has been an "only dog" for most of his life he may never totally accept the pup. He will get to a point of toleration but not full acceptance. That's been my experience in the past when bringing a new pup into the family when the older dog has pretty much had it his/her own way most of their life. But, you might get lucky. Good luck.

Good advise from Setternut. I would only add that be careful around feeding time. If a problem arises it normal begins around the food bowl. I always monitor my dogs during feeding just to make sure.

I wonder if it is a weim thing? When we got our first weim my wifes friends weim wanting nothing to do with our pup. Not mean just ignored. When we got our second pup our older weim would ignore him.
It was actaully funny because he did not want the puppy to touch him. If the puppy got to close to him or sat on his bed he would get up bark and find a new place to lay down. As funny as it sounds most weims I know don't care for the high energy level of puppies. Never agressive but just give it time.
