NJ Wild Quail Project Video

Cool video, thanks for sharing. There are some great projects going on out there, your wildlife departments are doing some noble work and all those volunteers too. Beautiful country out there.

quail hound,

You're right and thanks! A lot of people don't realize what NJ has to offer the upland hunter. It's not the Mid- West, but a hunter with a bird dog should find plenty of action with birds released multiple times a week during the hunting season. It was a only a few years ago that you could expect to have some action on WILD quail if you did your homework. There's an excellent woodcock migration and outstanding waterfowl hunting.
So if you ever find yourself "stuck" in NJ rest your mind, your Springers will find plenty of action!

Nice video. Those guys are doing it the manly way! It is hard to get equipment under the timber, hand planting is a monumental effort! Good to see young people involved.

Prairie Drifter,

My back hurts just looking at these guys! You're right about the youths, that's a real breath of fresh air.

Good stuff. I wonder how everything worked out since it looks like it was recorded in 2011.

Last year I was at the multi-state PF meeting for PF/QF and the NJ person talked a little about the quail in his home state. I think he said there were a couple spots in NJ that still had some wild quail.

great to see....I am from NJ originally...when I was young and first started bird hunting all we hunted was wild quail...and woodcock...there were some VERY long walks involved and we never had overfull game bags that's for sure but they are some great memories. when we did get a bird or 2 they were VERY much appreciated and was cause for celebration...I remember when I'd sit and pluck each one very carefully and my mom would cook them for me...

rascal,

I also have plenty of fond memories upland hunting in NJ. We hunted WILD pheasants, grouse, quail and woodcock. We always would try to get all four on the same day, no one person ever did but as a group we managed it once.
We hardly ever hunted the public WMA's, there was no need to, plenty of farms were not Posted or would let you hunt if you asked.Of course gas was 32 cents a gallon then too!

But it wasn't that long ago, maybe less than 10 years ago that you could still have a decent wild quail hunt. There is a lot of work being done to make that happen again!

I hunted in New Jersey one weekend. The southern pine barrens. Man, a lot of quail in the early 1970's,same as Delaware then. I sometimes think they maybe ahead of us in the Midwest. I know development is a problem, but there are lots of open ground in the barrens, with thinning and native grass, you have something permanent. In the midwest, we have trouble to accumulate vast enough habitat to that quail need in one chunk. Our ground is dependent on the whims of CRP, 640@ will not be enough in a barren, corn infested, township!

To be honest, I had no idea NJ had a wild quail populations (ever).

Glad to be educated;) I wish them the best of luck out there with this project.

Thanks for post the video Fldbred.:)

You're welcome! Despite it's size and population, NJ offers more than most of the other N.E. States.

oldandnew,

You're right on the money, and that fact hasn't gone unnoticed, the Pine Barrens are HUGE and offer a great opportunity to PERMANENTLY help the quail!
Here is the NJ Fish and Game Action Plan for Quail!
