NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

There was a chance for a trace of snow at the very dry Ponderosa. Well that trace has turned into about 4" and still snowing. Pretty dry snow, but I'll take it.

I did see a ice forecast for Kansas for Friday and it didn't look real good for Western/South Western and Central and North Central Kansas with up to 1 1/2 of ice. Hard to forecast of what will fall but the potential is there. Keep us posted!

Well, that was fun. I've had 2.55 inches so far, and it's raining again. Of course I have two bitches needing bred in this weather. Woke up to a 8-10 inch limb caving in two dog pens. Cratered 2 6X10 foot panels and did some damage to two gate panels as well. Had a male out touring the containment pen. Probably a half inch of ice or just under. Had another limb just miss my truck. Haven't gotten out on the area to see how much work that is going to be. May be a wasted week working to get back where we already were. Man o man we needed the moisture though.

The Ponderosa ended up with 2.70" from the storm. The moisture was much needed.

The ice took trees and power lines down. Was without power for eight days.

Maynard, is the wheat down by you as orange as it is North of you? Looks like a bunch of Winter Kill?

I'm guessing that's from fertilizer - as soon as it gets rain or moisture it should take off - but someone with more of an ag background could pipe up.

Wheat around here is really varied. A lot not looking good. Lots of dry conditions this year at planting time. Much wheat with little cover. I had been saying that it could be a dirty spring. The fields that had some moisture and the irrigated wheat looks pretty good for the most part.

The wheat just get's that brownish orange look when it's in dormancy. It's the wheat that didn't come up or is just coming up now that won't be very good. I looked at some that was just starting to spike through when I was there last weekend. It doesn't yield as well coming up late like it is because it doesn't have any fall tillers. It may delay wheat harvest being later which would be good for the pheasant. The wheat I saw is real variable depending if it got planted in moisture or not. What came up looks pretty good, but there are a lot of fields that have patches like I was talking about not emerged, or just emerging.

A few years ago while discussing the wheat crop with a farmer in NW KS he told me that "wheat can die seven times and we still get a good crop".

I took that to mean wheat could get burnt by frost/freeze up to seven times without worry. Am I correct in my assumption?

It just means it has 7 lives like a cat it's hard to kill. It doesn't matter how many times it freezes the wheat it is the timing. It's when it freezes it in the spring after it has jointed that it really hurts it. If its extremely dry and gets real cold, like sub zero for a long time it can winter kill before it breaks dormancy. Wheat is a tough crop, that's why they raise it in western Kansas.

Ponderosa is dry. Looked like we might get some and there were a few drops, but didn't wet the ground.

Looks like next week has a good shot at beneficial moisture a couple days. St. Francis received some nice moisture Friday! Much needed!

Dense fog this morning. Supposed to burn off about noon. Been quite a while since there has been enough moisture in the air for a fog. I was awaken with what I thought might be rain on the roof, but it was dew shaking off the trees. Still a nice sound on my roof.

We have been getting rain over here since Friday afternoon. The slow kind. I am afraid to look at the gauge for fear of disappointment. It is muddy enough I ain't driving the truck in the pasture. Hope you get some moisture soon.

Pasture update

Pasture is solid enough to drive on grass. Ground is soaking up the moisture. Just shot some clays with the boys and never got my feet wet. I was wearing slippers.

A little light precip moving through the area now. Looks like some of the Starbuck burn area in Clark County may be getting some light rain. A week or two of light rain would be great in those burn areas.
