hope springs eternal....good for you!

Very cool Jim. Looks like a wonderful place to live.

No its that saline reduction program (CP18). I like it because it's kinda of out in the middle of the field yet only 190 feet from the 5 row wind break(CP-5A)and it's 40 yard wide quail buffer (CP33). This will make 41 acres of CRP on this quarter, and it should be a real nice nesting cover spot.

Jim, can you tell me more on the eligibility on the CP18 and how it pays?

Do you have to have a known saline issue in the field?

Yes there is a saline problem along the natural drainage of the field about 6 to 7 acres so by the time they square it up it came to about 26 acres.

All the paperwork is in a moving box somewhere and as soon as I find it I'll let you know the details--it's not as good a deal as FWP but I don't care--its more habitat and thats all that counts:D

Man that looks really good Jim, and I hope it gets going well in the spring. I have said a good many prayers for the birds. The bible says to pray about everything, so it cannot hurt.

Just paid the seed bill for this project

20.6 acres planting Rosana Western Wheatgrass and Alkar Tall Wheatgrass and the total was $1,320.35 plus field prep and spraying for weed control.

The guy at the seed company said " Good thing you planted this fall as the cost of seed--all seed just went thru the roof"

The thing is if all goes well there will be 20.6 acres of quality nesting cover on this quarter in a couple of years :10sign:

I know how you feel, bought my seed in fall of '11 cause he said the drought across Kansas and Oklohoma would affect prices in the following spring. With drought everywhere, imagine the impact on seed prices now! Replanted 67 acres last year and my seed was over $7000, not including field prep, spraying and planting.

New CRP update

Well the fall planting has reacted to all the rain and sun.

This year it will next to beans---note the very straight rows, those are the beans

Nice work Jim. Wish my 140 fall planted acres looked that good. Hoping it will pop by the time I get back.

Planted some this spring that looked better than the fall stuff.

Also planted a new 41 acres into warm season with the new drill that I think should come in great. We'll see.........

Added the start of a new windbreak --it's not much just three 500 ft rows of cedar trees--but it is a start. In the ground 4 days and now 3/4 inch of rain--good timing LOL

No fabric for those cedars?

Nope--I'm doing this on my dime--each planted row cost $125 including trees and to add fabric adds $ 200 per row.

That said these are also located just behind the farm house and I have a towable tiller and intend to keep the weeds and grass in check with it. Time will tell.:D

We just planted 300 junipers on a small place east of Rapid, which lightened our wallets by $1800. We'd been told that the fabric doubled the tree's survival rate and boosted growth rate, but things are quite a bit dryer out here than for you....
