My Dog Is Spoiled Rotten - How Bout Yours???

On my 4th hunting dog in the last 20-25 yrs (all labs)...Up until now, the 1st three were all treated like one of the fam, but kennel dogs -primarily because they stayed wet & muddy all of the time from water-training & duck hunting (and I didn't feel like giving them a bath all the time).

Since we moved to CO & winters here in the foothills where I live are pretty brutal, we decided to make this latest one a house dog...Best thing I ever did!!! He is a well-mannered angel inside with full run of the the house, now sleeps on our bed, will jump up in a heartbeat & go hunting or training any day of the week, and my wife is complete friends with him & no longer jealous of all of my "hunting dogs"!

Just a couple minor glitches...he still obeys every command with gusto except for the one to go into his ex-outdoor "kennel" at which he now pitifully sulks & drags his feet ( :D )...he very obviously doesn't like getting feet full of thistles/stickers anymore ( ), & he sometimes now will go to my wife over me (I promise you dudes, this last one winds up working heavily in my favor in the long run)! ;)

Had several friends & dog training mentors tell me that making a dog an indoor companion would make him an incredibly better hunting companion, but I always secretly thought indoors would make a dog a complete sissy...Hallelujah, I've been converted & seen the light - he is a gentleman in the house & still a beast in the field - once I can ever get him away from my wife!!! :D

When I got my latest GSP Kramer, I worked diligently to train him to not get on the furniture, no table food and definitely no bed. When he was 7 months old, I went on a deer hunting trip for a week -returned home after an 8 hour drive at 5PM. My wife was cooking chicken breast and I thought "how nice, she's got dinner ready for me." I thanked her and she said for what, the chicken is for Kramer. When we went to bed, after a week away, I thought perhaps I may stand a chance, as we lay there in bed, Kramer suddenly jumped on the bed and GOT UNDER THE COVERS between my wife and I. She said she was "lonely" when I was gone -he now sleeps with us every night.

He's my dog during the day when we hunt and he too is a beast, but the rest of the year he's a pampered pet who gets chicken mixed with his food everyday specially made by momma. Between my wife and two daughters, he's treated like a king and definitely has more attention then me.

My grandfather always told me this was the fastest way to ruin a dog. "Good bird dogs don't live inside he'd say". Ofcourse this is the same guy that would shoot a dog at the first sign of being gun shy. "You can't change a gun shy dog, so there's no sense in feeding it all year".......well, I've dispelled both of those myths and it sounds like you guys have at least dispelled one of them with certainty. I think bringing them inside actually makes a better dog of them..........I KNOW it makes a better companion out of em'.

Their filthy little beasts:( [The pups] Mine love it on the bed, couch where ever.
Yup, mine have a deluxe outdoor/indoor kennel [doggie gitmo] They have stayed quite comfortably for a night now and then.
They much prefer spending the night in our bedroom on their own bed. Spoiled house dogs for sure, good bird dogs for sure too.:10sign:

I have a 7 year old female lab, and she has been a great house dog. Hardly even know she's in the house half the time. She has 2 couches she can lay on and even goes back in our bedroom and sleeps on the bed during the day. But she doesn't sleep with us at all. She has her bed on the floor next to our bed, or she sleeps out on a couch. Spoiled rotten, but when I break out that shotgun and she knows were going hunting, completely different dog. She's ready to go when it's time to hunt. I love having her in the house. Wouldn't do it any other way.............

I'm glad im not the only one! I have 2 and after having to go on trips each of the past two summers I have come back to the dogs being inside getting better treatment than I do by the mrs. lol My GSP and Lab just look at me when i want to sit on the couch; don't i know that thats their spot?!??!?!

If I were to let my beasts in the house they would destroy everything.

Some bad news, Gunny over ran our normal exercise run area yesterday and ran in front of a car. He came out with just a broken left hind leg. It is in a cast and the Vet said to keep him house bound and as quiet as possible for 3 weeks. I asked the Vet "How do I keep him quiet. He has been run most everyday about 1/2 hour since he was 10 weeks old. He replied "good for you". Now I ask you, how to keep a lovable mutt like him in the house 24/7 for 3 weeks and have him come out unspoiled. The good news is he'll still be ready for the fall Pheasant season if all goes well.........Bob

wow.. i have to say you got lucky.. maybe start teaching the WHOA on a britt? not saying its your fault, but would be a life saver if you had a chance to train that.

hope all gets better, we have that triangle of whos gonna get the most pheasants this year... i didnt forget!

On that triangle, I'll give up now. I just don't have the birds here to challenge anybody. I also don't remember what it was all about. I have been teaching whoa, but sometimes he does it and sometimes he don't. We are not firm on that one yet. He was coming back to me, so I did nothing. When suddenly this car came around a corner and there he was. The car was going slow from turning the corner and just clipped him in the butt...........Bob

well it was a debate on whos gonna be a better dog in finding those pheasants and you were pretty sure that gunne was gonna win this. .. a brit or a gsp contest...

Wow, Bob, sorry to hear of this. Hope all turns out ok. Gunne is still young, he should heal just fine. It could have been so much worse.

Bob, sorry to hear about Gunne. Wish I had some good advice on keeping him quiet for 3 weeks, but I don't. I would probably keep him crated as much as possible. At least for the first week or two. Good luck and I hope he recovers in time for hunting season.

Birdman , so that was it. I will still try it, but Now Gunne is going to be 3 weeks or more behind where I would want him to be. He is going to miss all the warm up outings like the Yearly Youth hunt. I have promised my grandson my dogs to help him. Thank god I still have Tony to work on this for us..........Bob

Gunne needs to rest and get better. a contest of whos better is not worth a dead dog as well.

i do hope gunne gets better quickly.
