Mountain Lions?

Livestock predation by mountain lions is minimal compared to coyotes and bears. Please inform me of the threat from them (other than their occasional snacking on free ranging housecats and yappy dogs- which might be considered as a plus). I believe that there have only been 2 recorded human fatalities attributed to lions in Colorado- EVER. Most states/provinces have never had an incident of human conflict. By contrast, I would be willing to bet that more folks have died in Kansas as a result of turkeys crashing through their windshields- and, certainly, from deer incidents.

I just don't understand the fear and horror that lions evoke in these neighboring states. And, I strongly condemn the bubba mentality which promotes killing them on sight. There's nothing heroic about executing one of these cats and such actions should be rightfully considered as an opportunistic attempt at notoriety by some dunce. That the public buys into this is pathetic.

Let's not have any more rational, intelligent outbursts.

Yeah I totally agree we wouldnt want them decimating our precious deer herd. I would much rather smack a couple deer with my truck on my way to go bird hunting.

I'm gonna buy one, and teach it to kill and retrieve deer for me. No more sitting in the treestand all day for this guy! :D

If you think they only prey on deer and not pheasants, get a clue. They will eat anything they can catch. Deer, pheasants, calves, etc. We don't need a large predator in Kansas.

As far as large predators go, we hunters are at the top of that food chain. When predating (hunting), I'll bet more people are killed by other deer and turkey hunters than anything else.

That's the kind of thinking that got this country ahead in the first place! I've always maintained that I'd pick up deer hunting if they'd let me do it w/ my bird dogs, but this plan sounds much more fun. Slap the Garmin/Tri-tronics on the kitty, then cut him loose and chase him across the plains. I like your way of thinking Sir!

TPHARKMAN--IS YOUR DAD KEEPING THAT GUN TOGETHER? BEST DO SO IF A CAT SNEAKS UP ON HIM?

Inside joke--his Dad had a little new gun problem 3 years ago. The mag cap on new auto flew off with spring, retainer and another part close behind onto snow covered ground. Unbelievably, we found all the parts and got it back together.

Ahh heck I thought they just ate deer and co-existed with all the other animals like in lion king, its a disney movie so its gotta be true. Why is it when the subject of apex predators comes up that loss of livestock is one of the arguments? But I never hear anyone complain about loss of crops to deer, elk, turkey or pheasant? Im not a farmer but I would have to think that there has to be a certain percentage of crops lost each year to wildlife. I would like to see that number compared to the number of livestock lost to predators.

you should see what 30,000 geese can do to a wheat field.

The KDWP officer lived about 5 miles West of Ellsworth. He was the one that had the lion in his freezer when they came in and went right to it. This happened around 8yrs ago. Also, before my dad retired he had a co-worker that was an avid bowhunter and had a very close friend that was a KDWP officer. The officer admitted that they had caught a few, tagged them and released them. If Colorado is doing it, then why wouldn't Kansas do it too? I believe that they do have knowledge of released/tagged cats but won't admit it!

About half way down in this artilce it says the KDWP was quick to go public about the 2007 killing but news about the radio collared was withheld until later the next summer so they could have a meeting about it. Sounds fishy to me, but to each his own.

You should see what a few 'apex predators' can do to a flock of geese.:D

I am still working on my 'apex predator' status. I make darn sure they don't land though... :D

Buck--My dad has been working on his shot for the last three years down in Kansas. Two years ago he finished off a bird that I winged...imagine me winging something. Last year he got tired in the middle of a section and said he was walking back to the truck. He no more turned around to head the opposite direction from the group and a rudy flew up in front of him and he capped its a++ in the middle of a cut milo field but we never did find it. As a matter of fact that was the day he sighted the little kitty kat.

This year after several gun malfunctions and multiple kill opportunities within 20 yards he finally killed a bird on a 30 bird flush out of a tailwater pit. Unfortunately for my dad, who is usually one of the most humble persons you will ever meet, he laid his gun on the ground and raised his hands in celebration like Hulk Hogan. Now for those who might judge, this is a man who has had the same knee replaced three times and is 68 years old and is willing to walk over 6 miles a day. In all honesty, he deserved that celebration. Just a few weeks later he shot another bird in my clear view that I thought would be stone cold dead and by the time we got the dogs to him the bird was gone.

To make a long story short the gun is performing well but the shooter is still struggling.

Hope you are doing well Buck.

My SEK hunting connection is currently away at trade school, but if you have the same report at this time next year, I PROMISE I will do my part to help out all the farmers of the region.

Lots of factors came together to make this a really unproductive hunting season for me.:( Having my best hunting/fishing buddy gone was definitely one of the toughest. Next year I will have to hunt twice as much since I barely got out this season.
