Like fine wine, what's your favorite brand/load?

Hand down my favorite load is a 3" Fiochii Golden Pheasant with 1 5/8 oz of nickel plated no 4's. It does a fine job breaking them down. In fact I am a bit leary shooting them over the dogs for that rare case you happen to clip the dog with the bottom edge of the pattern when shooting at a low flyer. Mind you I have never shot my dogs but have had some close calls that made me check the dog over when I got back to the truck.

If you have to check your dog for pellets when you return to your vehicle you are, in my opinion, taking shots you should not be taking. No pheasant is worth losing a dog or taking an eye out. Let those low flyers go unless you are 100% certain there is no chance of hitting the dog, your hunting partner or anything else. The ol' 45 degree rule is a pretty good one to follow. "Shoot a nothing that the angle in relation to the ground is less than 45 degrees". And oh yeah, I'm sure those 3 inchers will anchor a pheasant but IMHO they are way overkill. But, each to their own.

Totally agree with Dzeb on this. I do not want to hunt with you. Not worth the risk.

More than one close call....would not happen.
It's just a bird.

Wow... Iron clad pheasants.

When I'm fealin froggy, I will pull out the 16 ga with an ounce of 6's pokin along at 1200'ish. More often than not, I'm carrying the 20 with 11/16 oz of nickel plated #6 B&Ps. Even then, I feel like I'm being excessive. 7/8 oz of good hard #6 lead at 1200'ish has killed just as many if I'm honest with myself.

High Base 71/2 s' over the dog at 30yds max.. And no he's never bitten me for missing. Always pick your shots and no need to use heavy guns/loads.

try the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant in #5.....all the rest of your shells will get older, every year.

Hello Gents, This is only my second post, i love bird hunting we have a house in SD and hunt in Tripp Co. every year for the last 13 years!!
I have used many different rounds, but i have to admit that the Fiocchi nickle # 5s for WILD pheasant are without a doubt the best IMHO.
They are very fast, and when they hit bones they break them!! The shells do cost more but you will love the results!!

Federal Premium Wingshok 20ga 5 shot
Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 20ga 5 shot
Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 16ga 5 shot
Winchester Super X 16ga High Brass 6 shot

Usually Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 2 3/4" #6 but you guys have me thinking I should try 5s.

RR how do you like the B&P MB Long Range shells? Thinking about pulling the trigger on a flat of those.

Go for it Hobie, just a outstanding product! We just ordered two more cases of 20 ga. #5s GP, they will be waiting for us when we get out there.
Good luck this year guys.......

Test Them

What every you use, be sure to pattern your gun with them. Even great ammo won't pattern well in all guns. Shoot what your gun likes.

Lock and Load! :D

I know this is not a popular response but 2 ¾ #5 prairie storms are my go to shell. I have not had a problem with them crippling birds and they are only $15 a box shipped to my door from Reeds as long as you are a PF member.

Like i said in another post, shoot what you feel most comfortable with, my Grandfather would tell us stories about shooting pheasant on horseback along the railroad tracks with a 16 ga. he wasn't using Golden Pheasant. I have tried PS because we ran out of GP in South Dakota, not that bad but when it comes to a nickle round i don't think anything beats it, IMHO.
As i have also said, (for us) remember the rounds are the cheapest thing about a hunt, but the most important.
I am concerned about some of the news that i just herd from a farmer out in triangle. We were supposed to meet him for lunch on Wed. when we got into town and work some of the dogs before we take them to our other spots.
He said that the state didn't plant the grasses on the walk-ins. He stated that they looked terrible!
He said that they filled in grouse with out a problem. They also got their Antelope.
Thank the Lord for the farmers that we hunt on that have standing crop and water, that's why we pay. The one farmer told us that when we come out there wouldn't be any standing crop except on the three properties that we hunt.
The gent in the triangle said that every 10 miles they would see roosters.

Jmac: Interesting point about the Nitro. The Benelli never cycled sluggish until I began running those through... Hmmm. A good cleaning takes care of it but it's worth reviewing.

Thanks,

Daisybuck

Same here. Even after a good cleaning now my sbe cycles sluggish. This happened right after I started using the Nitro Pheasant. Hmmm
