Had the best hunting of the season Wednesday and Thursday at the Happy Hunting Grounds in NW. The winter front Tuesday night with two inches of snow and some wind did the trick. Had three by lunch time on Wednesday. Got two Thursday plus a quail. Saw good numbers where we didn't think there were many survivors of the drought -- seed stock.

I shot 3 Wednesday in the fresh snow as well. Something I noticed, some fields had lots of fresh tracks in them even though I didn't see many birds. They were just running out and I wasn't seeing them. I should have had my limit. I was hunting some wheat stubble Wed. morning in the fresh snow and the dogs were pointing several hens. I came up on a tumbleweed out in the middle of a big field, and my pup Kit was pointed with Festus and my old dog Clyde backing her. The stubble and the tumbleweed were all covered in fresh snow so I decided to take a picture as it would make a great picture to have blown up and hang on my wall. I reached in my pocket to get my camera, and just as I did the rooster got up and took off. I didn't even try to raise my gun. Thats why I don't take many pictures when hunting alone.

I hunted 6 days and shot 11 birds. I was quitting around 1 or 2 oclock every day and putting the dogs in the pen so I didn't wear them out as I was going to hunt a week. I drove around Wednesday afternoon, and it was surprising the number of fresh tracks I saw, and even quite a few along some WIHA patches. I suspect a lot of the old birds that are there this year have just been running and never being seen.

I did get a coyote that the dogs pointed in a tumbleweed patch as well.

A point on a coyote! That is the first one I have heard of.

DITTO just across the state line from you in CO. Rather Heartwarming... :10sign:

My Gordons have always pointed coyotes. I have shot 6 or 8 over the years they have pointed. My friend shot one they pointed earlier this year. I can't count the ones that have gotten away they have pointed. A lot of times its not safe to shoot them because of the dogs. This one two of the dogs had, and he ran the opposite direction of the other dog. Coyotes and bobcats are the only things I will shoot other than birds while hunting.

I was hunting quail a couple years ago. I had scattered some singles and Clyde went on a solid point with his head looking straight down. A typical single point right? Wrong a sleeping coyote jumped up out of the grass and the fight was on. They finally seperated enough I could get a clear shot. Clyde was a little tore up but ok. You would think that whould have tought him a lesson but he's pointed several more since then.

My friend had a tiny little setter, with the heart of a lion, she pointed everything, coyotes, grizzly bear,( other dogs ran with there hackles up), she would start up a coyote, porcupines, skunks, she hated porcupines, jumped in there to fight every one, got quilled in the corners of her eyes, inside her mouth, it was a mess. A year later she was at it again. Same result. This was in the sandhills of Nebraska, not a decent tree in site. Maybe some ponderosa pines a mile away as a wind break.

Mine will flash-point or pause, then go straight in for the attack. Both of my dogs are 60lbs+ so unless the yote is trapped, they don't even try to fight back and the chase is on until I call the dogs off.

I've had my dogs point most of the dryland furbearers over the years. I think the list includes: coyote, bobcat, badger, raccoon, skunk, and possum. The skunks are getting a bit old. The badgers I could really do without.

You guys had to bring up skunks. I had a dog pointed in some cattails in South Dakota. I went to kicking around trying to get the bird up and kicked a skunk. I got sprayed bad and had to ride back to Mobridge in the back of the truck.

Glad it ain't just me! Year before last I got it twice! I'm past the half dozen mark. My old Hawk male used to give me a sideways glance just before he went to shaking them! I laughed at one time because about everyone that had hunted with me had gotten sprayed. That was about 4 of my turns ago:) I had one day where I actually shot a triple on skunks. Same year I had 8 pointed skunks before I had 8 pointed birds. Glad I'm a trapper. I get a bit nostalgic when I smell one.

Good for you Brother:thumbsup: Lets hope that high plain drought monitor gets alot less colorfull soon. Catch you next season.

Steve, we failed. I only hunted 18 days, about half normal for me. Guess we'll have to resolve to do better next year. I know I want to get together. However, I do think it would be more fun if the dogs do more than just run back and forth in front of us. I pray that the good Lord blesses this country with a better weather year! Sorry for the hijack.

Pointing coyotes

Our black lab Simba killed at least 40 raccoon, several possum, cats, and several skunks her first eight years of life. After that she would point them and let me do the dirty work!

During her tenth year, she locked solid on point in some CRP that had a shallow ditch running through it. I went in to flush the rooster and had a male coyote that was crouched and staring at me run damn near between my legs. I shot him going away and he easily outweighed her by 10 pounds.

As I carried him back to the truck-we had a bounty fee in the county I resided in--I pondered more than once what the hell I would have done if that coyote would have lunged at me.

Simba pointed many a furry critter the last 4 years of her life.

My old Hawk dog pointed a coyote in NW Kansas some years back. The other guys hunting with me flushed it. I was 80 yards out in the wheat stubble and he ran straight at me watching the other guys over his shoulder. When he was about 5 yards away, I hollered at him and couldn't even shoot him I was dodging clods and laughing so hard!
