Kansas broods

I saw one Rooster on my way back home from Wichita. He was 1/4 mile East of mile marker 231 on I-70 flying from South to North. Just West of Salina a couple miles East of the first Wind Farm heading West. Now, I just gave out the best info on the only Rooster in them parts!!! I did not see any on my trip there coming from Colorado!!! There was standing water in most every low spot from just West of Colby to Kanorado.

Bleu,

You need to take the southern route and let me buy you an iced cold sarsaparilla or a steak or both.

I know that the turkeys were way behind this season. So I would suspect that was also the case with the quail and pheasants in the area.

I spent several hours Saturday morning running the dogs and working on my place. The quail were whistling like crazy. I assume that once they are nesting the whistling really slows down.

Wheat harvest is in full bore here in SEK,talked to several guys over the weekend,no one saw any quail chicks. Most times, they are already running around, but hopefully, its a late hatch this year.
The turkeys are real late this year, cool to cold spring weather has them about a month behind, might be the same with the quail.
We will see...

Saw a male Bob in Jefferson county Sunday morning running down the road and then flushed 2 turkeys on my place when I drove in to put out deer blocks. Hopin to see more of them little birds!

I've seen very few young turkeys. The ones I have seen are pretty good size though. Heard very few quail whistling here at my place. No roosters crowing at all. Just west of the house I have heard quite a few quail though.

I will do that, but I didn't have any Elk meat in tow to give you!

I didn't know elk meat was a requirement, but, of course, never refused. Hope to put a Colorado elk in the freezer this year again. It has been too long.

Still no broods of any kind. I did kick out a lone lesser prairie chicken this afternoon and a pair of quail that was under a clump of bindweed.

Wheat harvest in full swing in the area. I will check with some farmers and see if they are seeing any.

I just saw my first covey of quail. They were surprisingly pretty big, probably around 2 weeks old, they could really fly well. I would guess around 15 birds.

Fsentkilr,

Glad your seeing some birds.....
How's the weather been down your way?
Hearing many quail calling this year?

I have seen a few and been hearing several bobs calling.....love that whistle!

Good news!!! I think they will do better again this year then the Pheasants. Talked to my buddy harvesting and he has not seen a bird while cutting! He did see a pheasant brood down by Dodge. He cut one field in Ness that brought 42 bushel . The rest in Ness and around Dighton were in the 15-20 range. In Oklahoma he got 12 off the same fields he got 50 out of last year. Sparse and thin once you get into the fields.

I have not seen any quail, turkey or pheasant chicks yet. I really think things are just late.
The last week of turkey season we still had lots of gobbling, strutting, and larger groups of hens with the toms late in the day. Not the usual case at the end of the season.

I am hearing and seeing plenty of male quail. So maybe the others are nesting.

Pheasants, we are on the edge of the range, but I have seen average numbers in early spring. Now that the cover is up, I don't think I will see them.

We have been wet. There are more quail around here than there has been in a while. I actually shot several limits last season. I was a little worried the heavy rains may have hurt the nesting. My friend in Ness County has saw some young phez while combining wheat.
