Kansas broods

Wouldn't you know it, I had to be out of town today when my wheat(what little there was) got cut. Made it back a little before dark to check the irrigation and flushed a quail from a little puddle of water made by the end gun of the sprinkler up against the wheat stubble cut today. "No, wait a minute, that was a young pheasant. Hey, there is the hatch running and flying in the stubble. Hey, an adult lesser prairie chicken just flushed."

So I really don't know if it was a young hatch of pheasant or lesser prairie chicken, but either way I am happy. I will be on the watch out when the light is better and see what it was and hopefully see some more.

Friend in NW has seen few chicks and others have told him the same. Things are in bad shape out there right now.

We have been wet. There are more quail around here than there has been in a while. I actually shot several limits last season. I was a little worried the heavy rains may have hurt the nesting. My friend in Ness County has saw some young phez while combining wheat.

Our friend in Ness County doesn't seem to be seeing much at all, he said he has only seen 1 small hatch of 3 chicks so far while cutting his wheat.

I got to talk with my friend that is working the crop ground on my place.

First thing he said to me this morning was, "you got quail chicks running and flying all over the place" :D

I have not seen them yet, but I did see several pheasant in the plowed area of my 30' buffers around the fields.

Hope the weather stays nice, could have some rebound in bird numbers, in places.

M.R. - anything to report over the past few days down your way? Hoping for the best down there. We've had lots of memorable hunts over the years around dodge.

Two pheasant hatches at the ranch. I have seen no hatches in the ditches in my travels. Some quail whistling at headquarters today, my hired man reported, and a tom gobbling.

Hoping for a decent rebound.

Maynard,
Is Gray county much like where you are at? Last year was the first year, except for when I was stationed in South Korea for a year remote and in the desert one year, that I did not hunt Kansas for pheasants.

I have been hunting down west of Dodge since 1996.

I am planning on heading out there again this season with my son and my best friend.

My son and I went to South Dakota (9 hr drive versus 6 and spent more $$) and we shot one lone rooster near Platte, SD:eek:

So I think to where and what we know best this year.

Greg

I have yet to see any broods in Gray County. Talked to a neighbor here in Ford County that has several thousand acres of wheat and he saw a few hens, but no broods. He did see on elk headed my way the other evening.

Nothing showing up in the ditches yet.

At least we have a little relief from the sweltering heat. In eastern kansas it's not forecasted to be much above 90 over the next week +. Hopefully the same is true out there in western kansas which I would think would help the chicks at least get through those first few critical days.

I took the dogs out for a run this morning before it got to hot.
We heard several quail calling, and handled the dogs away from them.
But much to my surprise we got 2 adult roosters pointed. We are not really in "pheasant county", but there are enough around to give the dogs some exposure.

First pheasant hatch in the ditch today and it was the other side of the road right where I saw the quail hatch yesterday. A couple pheasants was all I saw.

This little stretch of road I travel most days is showing me some wildlife, quail hatch, pheasant young, roadrunner, whip tail coyote, bobcat and rattlesnakes and turkey just down the road a mile. By golly there is some wildlife left in SW Kansas. Oh, and today a flock of turkeys chasing a jack rabbit.

It is funny, how mother nature will respond. I think we tend to think that this land has not been through and then recovered from severe weather. Whether it is F-5 twisters, floods, blizzards, drought, etc.

Things will rebound in turn and I think is difficult for most is having patience, which of course is a virtue than I know I don't have at times.:p

I am just thankful that I live in a country where I can go out with my family and friends and enjoy the outdoors, hunt and shoot a gun, watch my dog work and no matter what, limit or no limit, it beats the hell out of a good days work.;)

Send more pics when you get them,

Greg

Took my two out for a run tonight.
Indy pointed and relocated several time along a long plum thicket. Ended up getting a hen pheasant pointed.

Then I saw something flush off to the side of him later in the run. He was just over a slight rise so I could not see what it was but it looked like a quail or two. Can't say if he was on point or if it was a stop to flush, but when I walked over to him. I flushed two quail that flew really strong. But I got the feeling that they may have been birds from an early hatch, they didn't look really filled out.

Did also get a nice back out of Ace.

So there are a few of them out there.
