Irish Setter Havoc Boots

I've gone to an alpaca sock (extreme) that really is warm and comfortable. It seems to makes up for the non insulation for my boots. I have a local mom and pop shop that my wife was buying yarn at when she said " You might want a pair of their socks" so I got out of the truck and went in and they sell their socks all over the world mostly to our soldiers over seas? I had never heard of these types of socks and I've tried them all (smart wool was my favorite) . Now alpaca socks are all I wear hunting and I even wore them this past spring turkey hunting . They are pricey @ $25 but worth it. I have seen them on ebay for about the same price. I too am looking at the Havoc Boot or the Cabelas new upland boot thanks to all the positive posts on this forum.

Thanks Again!

How heavy (thick) are these socks? They look rather heavy. Do you wear a liner sock underneath?

I wear exclusively Merino Wool socks. I believe they are about 70% Merino wool. They are not real heavy, more of a hiking boot type sock. I then put a lightweight line sock underneath to help wick moisture.

It just slays me when I see guys wearing cotton socks in their hunting boots. I haven't worn cotton in 40 years. Always light liner of silk, thermax or something similar and then some kind of wool or wool blend over that. Makes for a lot more comfortable feet at the end of the day.

I have been using Fox River socks for all my hiking and hunting activities, which includes both pushing bush for deer and sitting in a tree stand for a couple of hours. The skiing socks are the only ones in my drawer, so thats what gets used. I see they have a variety on their web site -- http://www.foxsox.com/Catalog/category.aspx?code=SNOW

These are great for sweat control, and very comfortable - more so than my RedHead socks.

I was wearing liner socks under my socks as well. I have found I don't use the liners with the alpacas its doesn't seem necessary. These alpacas are real thick but some how breath, but the thickness of the socks seems to make for more comfort minus the sweating. I was having trouble with my feet sweating bad-- always a wet sock at the end of the day, the liners were the best concept I could come up with until these alpacas. I have solved my sock quest now on to my boots??

LL Bean kangaroo upland boot---------I couldn't stand up the bottoms were so slick.
LL Bean Tech. boot --sent back 4 pairs with the stitching just ripping all the way out --sad I loved these boots especially the boa system.
Danner Pronghorns----these are prolly my favorite to date.
On to the Havoc or the Cabelas upland????

Thanks !!

I just placed an order to try these LL Bean Kangaroo boots, I really liked the boa system on their other technical boot but the stitching just wouldn't hold that stiff materal?? Their customer service was great but after 4 pairs I sadley gave up on this style of boot . Hopefully these will hold up??

These are on backorder till Sept 17??

I will be in Grand Junction Co this weekend visiting ( my daughter is moving 5 miles from Cabelas and sportmans warehouse:)) still want to try on the Havoc and Cabelas upland boots just in case..

I just ordered my pair of Irish setter havoc upland boots. Tried on a pair at Gander Mountain but they didnt have them in wide widths. I ordered a pair from Uplander Warehouse in the wide width. I had a pair of those all leather Irish setter upland boots for the last several years. I liked them and they wore real well, just a little on the heavey side. Looking forward to trying out the Havocs, hope they wear like the first pair of Irish Setters.

Are these boots made in the U.S.A. ?

Unfortunately not. Another China product. But they are great boots. I love mine. Most comfortable boots I've had in a long time. After a season in the field they are showing little signs of wear. I do keep them clean use Obenaufs on them.

i need a new pair of boots before this season.

I bought a pair of Irish Setters 12 years ago and they are still being used. not sure if their quality is still as good as it was back then, but I will definitely look into these.

Got my havocs upland boots today. Been wearing them around the house for the last couple of hours today. Feels like a good boot on the feet, very light. Cant wait to get them out in the field. I ordered them from Uplanders warehouse, got very good service. No shipping charge with orders over 100 dollars plus no sales tax. Got A good looking " I chase tails" window decal. I will definitly order from them again for other supplies

So Red Wing is farming out the Irish Setter brand to China? That's just not right. How long has that been going on?

I can't help but think quality will suffer somewhere along the line....

Guys -

Hoping someone can help clarify what the main differences are between an Upland Boot & a Big Game Boot with regards to construction, sole, etc.

Thanks.

Upland boots traditionally are moccasin construction, conform to the foot and are extremely comfortable for walking long distances on generally level ground. Typically have low tread profile to shed mud so your feet don't pick up 4 pounds when it's wet.

Big game have more aggressive soles, are usually not moccasin construction, usually have insulation for standing and sitting warmth. IMO they are stiffer, heavier, and pick up mud and are not made for long walking distances.

been going on for a while now.

I looked at the havoc boots. I asked the guy at cabelas if they had any reports of how they are doing in the field and all he said was "they are a nice danner knockoff".

i didn't like the fact that they had camo on the side, i wanted something plain looking so I went with a pair of danners.

i just picked up a pair of Irish Setter work boots and so far I like them.

regarding "made in the USA", the guy told me that Danner is in the process of moving a bunch of equipment and materials back to the US and they plan on offering a ton of options. If you go to their website it appears that is already happening. Lots of options for guys who want to keep it local. Unfortunetly the pair I bought was made in China, but I need a new pair of insulated boots as well and I will make sure it has the flag tag on it.

first post of the year... to focused on the season ahead :D

That noted I have the Havoc 9" in the link on the first post and I used them all of last year. I can not recall what waterproof'er I used on them last year but it made them a bit darker. No matter they got used hard.

Best boots I have used hands down. No signs of wear after about 12-15 outings and averaging about 3-5 hours of walking a day. The sole is perfect and seems to NOT hold mud, very very comfortable and feet never got tired. I use the Rock River socks on normal days, really cold days I use the liners and rock rivers and not once got cold.

Not cheap but I think they came down in price and are worth it. Make sure you try them on for size and a sock you think you would use. I went up a 1/2 size but if your normal size is close they do have a tiny stretch.

bumping an old thread... I'm planning to grab these over the Danner Pronghorns assuming guys are still having great luck with them? Bird hunting only and I'll log a lot of hours walking in them. Thanks ;)
