Been wondering and another thread sort of touched on the subject.

Without turning it into a "my way is the better way", I think it would be an interesting to hear how it breaks down.

So, is your hunting dog an "inside" or an "outside" dog? Inside meaning he shares the couch, might not share the bed, and only goes outside when you are at work, or to play.

Outside meaning an outdoor kennel area, maybe a hole cut in the garage wall.

Inside. I work from home and go in and out during the day. My setter and in the past tense 2 setters were with me most of the day. I just have dog beds for them in the rooms I go to and a good portion of the time they just go lay there. Absolutely not allowed on any furniture, bed etc. I'll only break down on the bed rule if Im out hunting and staying in a hotel room and she ran all day instead of the hard floor.

There is also an outside kennel for nicer weather or extended periods of time Im gone.

For one or two dogs I couldnt think of anything better.

Right now Im in the middle of establishing a new yard so my one dog is pretty much 100% house dog. Cant wait till the turf is in good enough shape to leave her out on it for a while.

Inside and very much a part of the family. Wouldn't have it any other way. I have wire crates in my home office for both dogs for when we are gone for short periods, but other than that they have run of the house. In the evening my younger one is in the recliner with me and sleeps in our bed. She is a devoted loving pet and one hell of a hunting and trial dog.

I was tempted to try to let mine "free roam" when we are gone, but I am not sure if he is ready for it. He is over his chewing phase, but still likes to play with my daughters toys once in a while Lol!

Inside, couch, bed, the whole works. They stay tied up on a run during the day though.

inside, outside

no couch, no tablescraps...sometimes;)

I am definetly of the no tablescraps philosophy, but we let him on the couches. I had a poll on another forum about the dogs on furniture thing, and it was a pretty interesting conversation.

Inside, he gets one spot on the couch but no beds and definitely no human food. He has to stay in a kennel outside when I cant take him with me to work.

Outside. Unless its cold then they come in. Or if the old ladys gone then they come in. The youngest pup is still a little to hyper and has a tendency to run my daughter over.

Outside.

All of my last four setters have been obtained as older kennel-bound dogs---3 to 8 years old.
However, my lab was obtained as a pup and he slept on the bed and considered a couch his.
Actually, inside or outside as a measure of whatever is a poor one, to me....every home has particulars that direct reality and practicality of choices and decisions.

I reckon that, at times, we choose based upon what we want and, especially, on what we think the dogs want and that may not always be correct....if vote the dogs could.

I had to stop seeing a really good looking redhead (I love redheads) because she was allergic to dogs and wanted me to start keeping mine outside.:(

Well, you got to have priorities, and yours seem to be in good order.
Good dogs are hard to find. :D

Agreed, wise move.

Mine stays inside and has free roam, if it's not too hot he'll stay outside while I am gone. He sleeps on the couch til it's bedtime, then he shares the bed also. He seems to get plenty of table scraps also.

Mick prefers outside. Dunno why, but he'd lived 4-6 years before I got him.

So, mornings involve coffee on, dog on yard leash. Around noon, dog in for a couple of biscuits and a scratch, back out to yard. In at supper time for half hour or so, back out till nightly news at 10 pm. Then in over-night.

Changes obviously with weather conditions and if I go somewhere and put him in the car, or boat, but there are times when I bring him in, in spite of his wishes because it's just so darn miserable out (for humans.) He has blissfully ignored the dog house for three years. ?

But he really could not have been a house dog, or even a pup that got much attention from humans before I got him. No hunting before, as far as I can tell, either; training was all new to him.

His life is different now. :)

Inside. Living in an apartment having a hyper dog is a handful. My Golden is not yet 2 and acts completely like a pup. Haven't met many that want to PLAY as much as him. Just wish he wanted to hunt that much. But he does love to hunt, but does much better without another dog to distract him. Wife spoils him. Bed, table scraps, couch anything. But i agree as some said, I think dogs probably like the outside more, but most love the companionship with humans so will tolerate indoors to be with us.

Yes sir! You can sleep with a blonde, you can sleep with a brunette, but you'll never get any sleep with a redhead.;):D

I'm glad you asked. I speculated that it was probably 90% inside, but then started wondering myself...

The way guys talk about their dogs on this forum, you can tell they are part of the family.
