Hunting Literature

Who are some of your favorite authors who write about hunting? I like Jim Harrison and Hemingway, for two. Harrison's "The Sporting Life" is a fair read.

In high school as part of a team I was on I was given a copy of Aldo Leopold's "A Sand County Almanac". I didn't read it. In college, I took an Environmental Issues and Ethics class and it was a required read. I regret not having read it 5 years earlier.

I agree with Leopold's "Sand County Almanac" had to read it in HS and ended up buying a copy it was so good.

I have several favorites...Jim Fergus, Robert Ruark, Aldo Leopold, Larry Brown are all good reads. Check out Patrick McManus if you want a good laugh.

Havilah Babcock, dean of the low country quail hunters, "Jaybirds go to hell on Sunday", " I don't want to shoot an elephant" Nash Buckingham, a life of stories of quail and waterfowl in the south, and the immortal Gordon MacQuarrie, "The Old Duck hunters Incouragable", Tales of the Old Duck Hunters, parts 1 and 2. Laughs and memories of the halycon days and more innocent times.

Have read many of the mentioned here. I recomend Peter HathawayCapstick and many of the authors he quoted and researched for his books about Afrika and maneaters. Death In the Long Grass is a good place to start.

Aldo Leoplold, Robert Raurk, Guy de la Valdene... I can't get my hands on enough good books, keep the suggestions coming fellas. I'm planning on going back to school to be a wildlife biologist so my favorite right now is Leopold.

Just enjoyed a read of "A High Lonesome Call" by Robert Holthousen. "African Game Trails" by TR and "Hunter" by JA Hunter are great African stories. Boy, Roosevelt couldn't hit squat though....

Any book by the following authors is a great read in my opinion:

Michael McIntosh
Joel Spring
Jim Fergus
Ben O Williams
Tom Davis
John Holt
Robert Holthouser
Datus Proper
Larry Brown
Steve Grooms
Joel Vance
Terry Wieland
Galen Winter
Patrick F.McManus
Peter Hataway Capstick

For older authors I like:

Elmer Keith
Nash Buckingham
Burt Spiller
Robert Ruark
Gene Hill
Edward Abbey
Ernest Hemminway

I'm sure I have some some other great reads out but if you start with these it will keep you busy until hunting season starts again!!
