How to make money hunting

I think I'm done working for a living. I've decided to just hunt from now on. The only problem is I need to find a way I can make money while hunting with out working (aka guiding or TV show). I thought about while I'm hunting I would strap a metal detector on my back and dig for gold but not alot of gold in Kansas. Any ideas?

I've thought about this for hours and hours in my lifetime. If I had any ideas my friend, I'd send you a pm requesting a partnership. Hunt in the winter, find a way to get paid for coaching youth baseball and soccer, do some taxidermy, , guide some fishing trips, let my wife sell flowers and raise upland game birds to sell......that metal detector idea ain't half bad either. Prolly oughtta set your sights on something other than gold while you're hunting in KS;) Who knows, maybe someday they'll have a portable oil detector and a soil analyzer. If you could carry all 3 of those tools w/ you everywhere you go, you might be onto something:D

Oh yeah, you could probably find some fields of the "cash crop" during dove season. Since you have no $ invested, anything you make is pure profit:eek:

Guys it is easy. Just buy some land, plant some food plots and some large shelterbelts, find a good booking agent or set up a website, do a little other advertising and take in hunters.

You wouldn't happen to be a loan officer would you? All I need is someone w/ a plug on that kind of $ and faith in my ability to succeed and I'll buy half a county tomorrow! Only question I'd have is where do I sign?:)

RoosterTim,

Whadd'ya got on a down payment? I could cash in my 401k and have at least $1,500 tomorrow:D

Get a truffle smelling pig and hunt birds and truffles at the same time.

Tim, how could we have we have missed this in our hours of pondering?

Britchaser, I guess I'm going to have to do an internet search to find out what a truffle is;) Actually, I found out about 2 weeks ago on TV. Some kind of fancy mushroom the English folks eat right? I don't think we have those in KS.

I think someone from this site should have a hunting show. It would be the every man bird hunter. A regular guy with a dog he trained himself hopping from state to state hunting public land and putting birds in the bag. No orvis endorsed lodges and dogs that cost more than most of our trucks, just some good honest bird hunting. I would love to star in or watch that show and I'm sure the rest of you would to.

That is not a bad idea. Hunt someplace where there are no pen raised birds. There are probably enough guys on this site that the hunt could move from place to place hunting different states. Video would not be that tough to handle. It would just be a matter of marketing. And I have no clue how to do that.

Yep we could get some good mountain and valley quail hunts here around these parts, chukar farther north. Swing into Oregon for some huns, chukar, pheasants, and quail. Montana for prarie grouse, huns and pheasants. So on and so on, showing people how to research their trip and how to prepare game.

that would be great, but money to produce a show like that takes sponsors......so there you go, holding up a bag of Purina or handling a Tritronics/Garmin collar......even if you don't use the product, not for me, always strings attached.

You my friend are one of those geniouses. My god man why on earth did I not think of that. Plus if the pig is no good at hunting you have a ready supply of bacon to wrap quail breast in for the grill. Like all great ideas this is simple and will lead to millions. I think you might have to patent this idea before it is stolen.

Trust me guys while sitting in the desert thinking that I want to do anything other then turn into the first petrified human this thought has crossed my mind at least a dozen times. The money up front to do a show lime this wouldn't be the hard part. The unfortunate part is we only make a small part of the viewing population. There are far too many blood thirsty " hunters/viewers" that don't want to see what really goes into a successful hunt. They only view success by the sheer number of birds piled o. The tailgate or I. Front of said preserves sign. If we could persuade more people to view success afield as a good day of dog work with some good friends in some truly wild spot we would all be in the tv hunting world. I don't mean to shoot down Antibes dreams and as a matter of fact I will continue my quest to change the way people view success on hunter at a time:)

Did any of you used to watch a show, I can't remember the name right now, but it was set up like a book each time with chapters. He had a setter named Charlie I think and hunted mostly in the western US such as Cali. The guy dressed like he just fell out of the L.L Bean catalog. Very good show with good dog tips and wild birds most of the time I think. Now every show is deer hunting or elk or something like that.

My brother and I have talked about a hunting show where each week something bad happens like you drive to western KS and forget your gun, or the dog acts up all weekend or you don't see anything or you rip your pants or you get stuck and spend half the day getting out. We were going to call it Real Life Hunting.

This also got me thinking tonight about a tips section on the main board. Such as one think I like to do keep shells in zip lock bags to make sure they don't get wet. I write on the labels so I know what shot, brand and when they were bought. Just small stuff like that to help each other out. Any thoughts?

What about a tactics section as well such as I like to hunt the waterways backwards. Everyone hunts from the road to the center of the section in walk-in so I mix it up and walk it from the center to the road. Or is this getting a little too personel like giving away your best mushroom spot?
