How many of you have hunted preserve birds. If you will, explain if you hunt more preserve birds then wild birds and why

Just like to know if wild bird hunting is less popular and if so, why is that?

I hunt both wild and preserve.

Last year I had more frequent trips to a preserve - training a new dog on preserve birds. I do not hunt wild pheasants in Mn...too few birds for the time invested, travel expense and frustration level.

I hunted both preserve birds and wild in SD last year. The wild birds were hunted at walk-in fields - lots of walking for the number of birds produced. However, I enjoyed both as I'm not concerned with numbers or limits.

I do both ! I prefer wild birds the challenge is far more intriguing and a late season Wild wiley Rooster is worth all the pen or perserve birds x10 ive ever shot

I hunt preserves occasionally to get the dogs some work, but only if the wild bird season is closed.

Last year wasn't too great in MN, but we still got birds. Nothing compares to a wild bird.

+1. Maybe one or 2 trips to a preserve in February or march when season is closed.

I use to hunt preserve birds until Illinois up the price to $25.00 for two birds not worth my time driving an hour to Kewanee Il.

Both
The more birds the better for the dog. I run the dog on private land and shoot pen raised Quail and I do go to the game farms also. This is good training for the dog and my wife. To kill tame birds is not so much fun but when training a dog and a date with the wife can't beat it.
The wild birds is my time with my dog.

In Pa it is released birds from the state or go to a preserve. I hunt during the state season and go to the preserve. It's the only option in Pa for pheasants.

Here in southern New England there is no wild population of pheasants, so I joined a hunting club that stocks its fields throughout the season. It isn't like hunting wild birds, but it's an opportunity to work my dog -- she loves it, and I enjoy hunting with her.

Both

I hunt both. By far I prefer the wild birds. I like to extend the hunting season with preserve hunting and it keeps the dog tuned. Also if permitted I prefer to preserve hunt where it's scratch birds only.

P.S. It also gets me out of the honey do list a few more days a year.

Not Yet

I haven't but there aren't any wild pheasants where I live. One of my friends that will be hunting with me in South Dakota this year wants to get his Springer on some pheasants. So, we will probably do a preserve hunt at the end of the summer.

Lock and Load! :D

Wild Birds when the season is open. Preserve birds when the season is closed. Here is a pic of 4 Gusgsp and I got this year.

Awesome pic Tbear:coolpics::10sign:

Of coarse, like everyone else I prefer and hunt wild birds when ever I can. Used to have places to go here in Illinois until 2007 when crp came out. Used to hunt Iowa, close enough to make weekend trips, until 2008. Wet springs last 4 years made it tough nesting, birds practically extinct. Got land over there, replanting CRP in process, hoping for a brighter future. Went to SD last fall for 1st time, won't say how we did, but we are going back(don't want to give any more people thoughts of going there).
Been going to hunt club last 3 years, I owe it to my dogs to put them in birds. I get 20 bird card for $450, club I go to doesn't make me put out birds when I show up. This allows me to hunt birds released previously by others either missed or not found. They seem to be a step up, a little more wiley than right out of the cage. Been harvesting at least 40 birds there a season, guess it is better than not hunting at all. Good tune up keeping dogs in shape, myself included. Also great place to take kids!

I hunt all 3 - wild, preserve and State land with released birds. Dogs seem to like the smell of all 3. The state land is a mile down the road so its too close to pass up. Like most others I assume, I'd rather take 1 wild rooster than 5 released birds.

I take the dogs out before and after the season for preserve birds. Hunt SD and Iowa for wild birds.

We'll go once or twice a year for released birds, just to get the dog out more than anything. Took a construction superintendent from Florida, he'd never been bird 'hunting' before. After hunting the released birds he was hooked, raring to buy a new bird shotgun and get a dog to go out west to do some real hunting. I tried to make it known to him that wild bird hunting isn't going to be anything like what he experienced on the released birds. Hard to convince him that real hunting you might walk all day for a chance at a couple shots.

Have done the preserve thing before and it was not my cup of tea so don't plan to do it again unless it was the same as previous reason (company trip/comraderie).

Hank & I hunt both. Wild birds are preferred, but preserve birds fill-in the gaps & keep us both tuned-up.

If you have the opportunity to hunt the leftover/scratch birds you'll find them challenging - elusive and will often run a dog around before the flush. I'm speaking of pheasants, not chuckers. We hunt on Monday mornings, after the weekend hunts; there's always a few birds left and we do have to hunt them.

And I find the birds seem to fly the same and I do miss!

It's great work for a young dog, especially if you have tall grass and can make the hunt interesting and challenging.
