How many of you let birds go?

Yeah I agree.I never shoot young birds, that's low bagger imo.Give them a chance to live for years.
My reason is I prefer to shoot a fully colored bird, then one that has a little red showing by the eye and saying I heard it cackled. When I come back 3 weeks later, if that same bird gets up I'll be shooting it. Most of birds you shoot are hatch that year anyway.

Done both…some are so small, despite cackling or having discernible color, I pass…like robin sized, maybe a bit bigger. My first bird on opener last year was smallish, but not tiny..but he flew out into the wide open, towards me, north to south…I whiffed on the first shot, barely got him with the second shot. We had about 9” of rain around 6/20/24, think some nests washed out, forcing some later renesting. But even a few days ago, I saw tiny chicks…they could fly, but tiny..

I only shoot at big,2 year old birds. It isn't important to get a limit, but it is important to kill a bird with honor. That way,you won't have bad karma rearing up in your life.
Goose good to have you back with your truly interesting insights. I was afraid you had a ski boat accident showing Benelli Banger around and the world would have experienced a great lose in wisdom.

Between Goose and I, what if one of us transitioned, and we became a couple, and traveled the prairie drinking PBR, chasing roosters, and doing street theatre in places like Miles City, Mott, Chamberlain? How do you know we haven’t? Could my absence from this board have something to do with this scenario?? It’s plausible…

Once again I can not unsee a scenario you have presented. The picture involves shorts, black socks, sandals and a white T-shirt along with a PBR in hand.

We’ll do Shakespeare in the park…you’re an educated, literate individual…son of a judge..you probably would prefer that we recreate the crescendo scene from “A Few Good Men”…you be the Jack Nicholson character…Jessup? I’ll be the pretty gal that fawned over the Tom Cruise character, since I transitioned and am now part woman. We’ll need the Cruise character, and, Val Kilmer. We’ll do auditions soon…Mn state fair? Mn horse and hunt club? Ok, we’re moving forward! We’ll incorporate hunting into it…”A Few Good Hens”… about your nephew mis-ID’ng some hens, but they looked very rooster-like…Jessup’s character will be high-level GFP official…lots to think about! 🦆🐔

I just do it so they can grow up. I hunt both private and public. So on public, chances are that it will get harvested. But on private, he will carry over......if nature allows.

There really is no right or wrong answer as I said. If you buy a lic. It is your prerogative. It was more of a curiosity question.

Thanks for the answers.View attachment 11192
Beautiful dog! And some impressive tailfeathers.

I think you are a better bird hunter if you can distinguish the young from the old and harvest the younger birds before they suffer the entire winter
You don't shoot young birds, if they don't have all their color. Just don't shoot. Maybe they will make it until 3 or 4 years down the road or more.
