WOW...my wife who ususally travels to Europe in the summer has decided that there are places in the US that she wants to see. She has picked Mt. Rushmore; so me and the misses will be headed your way. Here is what JMc needs:

1. Places to stay in or around the area,
2. Places to eat in or around the area,
3. Other places to visit while in SD and surrounding areas, and finally,
4. A place to meet you guys from SD; first round is on ME!

No, we will not be rolling up in my Chevy; we will be in the wifey's shiny black GMC Acadia!

South Dakota vacation

Keep in touch. I live 20 miles from Mt. Rushmore, 5 miles from Crazy Horse, 3 miles from Custer State Park (worlds largest Buffalo herd), 24 miles from The Mamouth site (a must see) and much much more.

Would be willing to act as guide.

SD Vacation

Oh ya one more thing, don't plan on early AUG as the Black Hills Motorcycle Classic (Sturgis) is at that time. It gets very hard to find lodging and is very expensive plus the roads are a zoo.

Custer Park a must as are the Badlands in my opinion. I'll leave accomodations to others trhat live out that way, tho staying at one of the Custer Park Lodges sounds like a winner.
If you are coming thru the Sioux Falls area , let me know.

JMC, your wife is SMART!

You will love the hills in summer. We are having a family reunion out there after a couple days at the lodge. We are planning to stay at Sylvan Lake Lodge and hosreback ride at BlueBell, see Custer, Rushmore, Harney Peak and Spearfish Canyon. No shortage of places to eat in Custer, Hotsprings, and other small towns nearby. SDJIM can probably give you all the local haunts. Lots of tourist traps too but I like to avoid those:D

Shooting for early July. I'll keep in touch and let you guys know. Thanks for the help!

Don't forget Deadwood, drive through the needles highway, and spearfish canyon. Devil's tower isn't to bad of a drive either. You can get some pretty good hotel rates from the casinos in Deadwood/Lead. Lead tends to be a little cheaper. Slyvan lake is very nice.

There is a lot to see...don't get stuck in Keystone in the many trinket shops!

for my 2 cents....Needles Highway is a must see! It is one of the great wonders of creation...and a good vantage point to see some of the rest of the hills. Custer State Park is a must. Last summer we saw more wildlife than I can ever remember! Saw a nice herd of elk driving through Wind Cave National Park. Also...if you are first time visitor to SD it is worth your time to drive through the Badlands. :)

You guys forget, I live in the TX Panhandle...how much "badder" can it get...:p

JMc, Great choice, the Black Hills for a vacation. My bride and I might make the trip ourselves this Summer. There's a steam RR by Lead that's fun. Needles highway and Mt Rushmore, Custer Park of coarse. Devils tower is a National Monument and worth the drive, take the back roads all beautiful pine park type countryside.
If you can, avoid the first week in July and during the motorcycle rally. Hard to find lodging and people:eek::eek: and TRAFFIC!! Not kidding.
June and August are much better. Your gonna have a fun time.

JMc-

Sounds like an awesome trip in the planning. My wife has been wanting to do that, but then we pretty much only travel from Dodge to KC to see the kids and grandkids, but adding a new chapter in our lives now, travel to medical facilities(not near as much fun as the grandkids and way more expensive).

Have fun and give us a Photo Essay upon your return, if you don't mind.

Would love to do that, but we, the old senior citizens would slow down you kids.

In my very limited travels, I have been in that area of South Dakota. It was a hurried trip at Halloween time in 1968 or 1969 to help my late brother get a stranded truck, complete with combine and header trailer at Belle Fourche. The trip was quite an adventure, one of many I was on with my brother. My wife always gets tickled when I tell the story. Shoot, even yesterday, coming back from the doctor, we went by a road side park that we left the truck and combine at from that trip, and the mention of it got my wife laughing, which was the wrong thing to do, since my belly is still pretty tender(no lifting, no laughing, no coughing, no sneezing allowed at moment).

Thanks for the kind offer!

It's great that you have those memories...best of luck on your healing. I know I'm a couple of zip codes away, but let me know if I can ever help you or your family.

Thanks. In this country we are neighbors.

James Pepper: You know, there's an old saying, Miss Sally. There's no law west of Dodge and no God west of the Pecos. Right, Mr. Chisum?
John Simpson Chisum: Wrong, Mr. Pepper. Because no matter where people go, sooner or later there's the law. And sooner or later they find God's already been there.

I am not sure of the year(68 or 69), but I do know we were in Hot Springs on Halloween night, which happened to be my brother's birthday. To celebrate, he wanted to go into town and scream at some trick-or-treaters. The screaming is a long story in itself, but we have a cousin that loved to send out blood curdling screams at kids, bicyclists, walkers, etc and my brother picked some of it up. Hope none of our UPH SD buddies was a kid in town that night, but we left the truck and combine at a truck stop and took the car into town, and, I will have to admit that my brother screamed at a few kids. To his credit, he didn't steal any of the candy, but boy did they drop their sacks and run. Hope my brother didn't cause any permanent injuries.
