Had a good Sunday, aside from a little Truck mishap.

Had a great morning. shot 7 birds in the first few fields. Then the roads started to soften up a little, or a lot real quick. Weather was supposed to hold under freezing until 3 or so. Wasn't the case and got warmer quicker. Just wasn't going to make it up the hill.... Slid off the road and started rutting it up pretty good. Made a few attempts to rock it out and got a little further but it wasn't going to make a difference at that point. Had a buddy that was hunting about an hour west of us. He said he would stop by and try to pull us out on his way back through, I had a pretty good idea he wasn't going to be able to pull us out, but it was early enough I wasn't too concerned about it. My truck is 2 wheel drive, but i've never had it stuck until now.

Just so happened we got stuck right next to the field I was heading to. SO we hunted it, I shot 3 more, and my buddy shot another 1. So we needed 1 more bird to finish the day. So the other guy shows up in his 4x4 supercrew. Gets his truck stuck up the the frame. Ended up walking a couple miles down the road to a farmhouse, the guys wife answered the door I explained the situation and her husband didn't even hesistate, turned out to be one hell of a nice guy. Went and fired up the tractor and came and pulled us both out. He had a damn good time doing it as well. lol

Anyway he got us both out and back on the hardtop, and to boot he gave us some more land to hunt, just said he wants to come with one time.

I had one spot in mind to go get our last bird, and sure enough it worked out. So ended the day with 3 limits... and a good memory. Good times!

Looks like u had fun, but Spence, did christmas come early, u sure got some nice hunting duds on in the pic, looks like a Cabelas ad!

lol.... uplanders warehouse hat. 3 season old sweatshirt, and 3 season old Vest. and finally had to break down and buy another pair of Carhartts.

That vest is one of the best purchases I have made. I think I'd prefer a Strap vest though. I never really noticed it when I was wearing my old vests, but this has a waist strap and chest should straps you can tighten. you can def tell the difference when its full with shells and birds.

How far west and north were u? I decided not to come out this year as my nephew who farms Ulysses area said the bird numbers are way down and the drought has the cover knocked down. If I were within 4 hours or so I would come anyway, but 14 hours is too big a gamble!

Spence, the dog has the right idea!!!!! Feet nice and dry!!!!!!LOL!!! GCB not close enough to come get ya?

I was south of Nebraska and East of Colorado. :D
naw GCB would have been a good hour and a half away. if he would have came we never would have gotten it pulled out anyway. He would have been laughing to hard.

I'm a firm believer that 4 wheel drive just gets you stuck further. And it proved to be the case when that 4 x 4 showed up. I'll get a pic of that posted here soon.

Seems like every trip where thruck broke down or got stuck, the hunting was outstanding. I have and use 4x4, but I agree it makes some people braver than they should be! I can tell just by looking at the mud road in the picture, I'm not that brave, 4x4 or not. Great Pic.

You are not the first person to drive in on a frozen road only to have it thaw :D

I drive in 2 wheel drive and then use 4 wheel drive to get out of trouble.
Thats a heck of a deal, farmer pulls you out and then lets you hunt is land. New strategy for getting permission to hunt  :D

That happened to me last year, except is was one of those ninja 4' snow drifts that come out of nowhere, snow in the engine compartment and everything.

At least if you take a shovel, you can dig yourself out of the snow usually! :D

Offered him money and Birds... wouldn't take either, but did show interest in possibly hunting together one day. Also found out what he drinks, so i'll drop some of that off next time I'm out there.

Nice job, Spence! Your hunting stories sound an awful lot like mine! Except that you got a limit... I tend to just get stuck in the mud...:D

All those birds lined up on the bedrail makes me hopeful for my trip this weekend!

Spence,
Nice gesture I'm sure he will appreciate on a cold night this winter.

I changed my mind and will be heading to Kansas tonite, Tell me what he drinks and his location and I will take him his favorite beverage for you free of charge, and I promise not to get stuck near his place:cool: On 2nd thought pm me the location so internet lurkers won't figure out Pheasant central location:D

Hey, that's a lot of pheasants. What's the limit out there east of CO and south of NE anyway? You met a really nice farmer.

Been buried in more than one of those " bottomless" roads before. I agree that 4wheel drive makes some feel invincible. Snow and some mud ok. Those roads 4 wheel, 2 wheel, no wheels really doesn't matter. You won't get as stuck in a 2 wheel drive. Looks like another good trip. I have made the " walk of shame" to the farmhouse a couple of times. Once when I was a youngster, drunk, and drove my dads pickup into a pond. But that is fodder for another thread.

yup some of those roads it doesn't matter what you are in. I've been stuck probably 4 times in my pheasant hunting career, couple times in a goose field. First time in this truck.

Did you get my PM Carptom?
