GoPro Hero

When my movie maker on windows 7 "quit working" I changed the file name and ran it again. It didn't like the file name is all I can figure.

yes...thanks for the info too. I'm looking at the GoPro I have and I think its the very first ones that were out.....just says Hero on it.....is it usable? Steve?

They are all useable. As I have chirped, just don't go in to one thinking you get this awesome video on TV. All the video you see on here, my site, etc, is what you get. Some are happy, I say it is OK for certain applications, as long as the users anticipation level is in tune with the low cost product. There are some other goggle gadgets out there but I suspect they don't do any better then the go proless.:D It is what it is. If we want the great video we see on bird hunting programs on TV, then it is clear that a good camera and a man behind it doing the video for you is the way to go. But nothing else allows us to strap a camera to our forehead and film.

true. yes..I filmed hunting shows and DVDs for 5 years with megga $ cameras...I know I can't get that quality from a GoPro but its cool to be able to capture the moment hands free for personal use

Yep, that's the just of it. I hope they come up with one that auto focuses where the aim point is at further range, and does a faster job of it. Focus catch up is slow causing the blur effects. I would pay 4 times what they cost for one that would just do that. And be a bit more clear. Mine says HD, but I would not consider it high def by any means of the term. Not even remotely close. My hand held camera phone is more clear. The concept of the whole thing is the bomb, and I can't argue that.

FCSpringer, which model Gopro do you have? When I look at my videos on my computer, they are really pretty darn clear. They look way better than when played back on Youtube. Does it look like National Geographic on and HD channel, no but its pretty good. I can tell the difference between a male or female quail in flight.

But you can only see small things so far away. Not sure that it can be much better with a fixed lens.

I have the hero HD. So far on the web everywhere including here I have not seen a clear video posted. None of them. Sure they are video. But when you look at the ones they advertise? Nothing like it. That's all I have tried to say. Anyone can see this simply by viewing any ones videos, including mine. Mine works just as well as yours and every ones. I just don't consider it that great is all. Its functional sure. But not as seen on their site or TV.

Looking back this is the best one I ever got training. I just saw one where a guy posted where you can click a icon to make it 1080p mine don't show that option, so maybe that is a youtube thing. His were slightly better, but still not stupendous. I just think light, clouds etc all has to line up just right. Have to have the sun at your back and partly cloudy to sunny, and not much wind. As the bad blowing grass causes fuzziness. Not sure how to set up the click for 1080p deal, anyone know whats up with that?

I think it looks good.
Have you tried to upload to youtube to see if you get those options?
I have forgotten, which go pro do yu have?

Another thing to note is my videos look much better on my computer then they do on youtube, even with the quality settings. I think that kinda sucks, but as long as people can see what is going on......im ok with it.

Last wild bird point, shot retrieve of the season. Go Pro Hero 3 set to 1080 Narrow.
Still have to change the quality on the bottom right corner of the viewing window.

I guess I am happy with the results.

BTW, the Gopro Hero Black wasnt really made for hacks like us. If you look at the resolutions that they offer it is WAY out of our league. Our T.V s dont even support them.
SO the advertising is somewhat false and very misleading. But LIke I said. I still enjoy it. You will have those videos of River long after he is gone.:)

Good choice on the 3+, GoPro 3 had too many issues needing fixing after buying. Here is a post I put in the Colorado forum.

I have done quite a bit of filming and here are my tips.

1. I agree the above regarding the narrow the Field of view (FOV). Depending on which GoPro, you may be limited. I have Hero2 and the narrow FOV is only an option at 1080-30 so you can't do slow motion well. Don't know the FOV options on Hero3.

2. The quality of the video on Hero2 is greatly limited by decreased sunlight. If you notice on the GoPro website their vids are always middle of the day. Their vids turned out so good because they have several cameras and likely Many, Many repeat performances to get the quality they want. The Hero3 is supposed to be improved in low light conditions.

3. There are several ways to mount, gun, chest, dog, head. Head has the best view by far. Gun mount sound great but if you want to video others they will get a littler upset if you point your gun at them to film. Chest mount is obscured by the gun and Non-dominant elbow. Dog views, you need a lot of vid to get very few seconds of usable clips because of the shaking while they run. Head mounts give the best view but You have to train yourself to look around with your eyes not your head. You also have to learn to walk softly to avoid bounce. When a dog is on point, you won't remember. I have been thinking about belt mounts which may work well but is limited by the depth of the vegetation.

4. When the weather is cold or wet, keep looking at the lens on the cover. You never know when it gets frozen over or fogged.

5. Quail hunting with the GoPro will almost never turn out satisfactory because of the size of the bird and the backdrop. It is always difficult to see a bird with trees in the background. Pheasant on the prairie is the best situation for filming. Large birds, Usually sky in the backdrop as they launch up.

6. When uploading to Youtube, there is considerable resolution lost despite uploading in 1080p.

Below is my vid that I put up after my North Dakota trip. You can see the image issues in low light, fogging/freezing lens, fog in case. Just note The still pictures were taken with a Canon SLR so the quality is outstanding. When walking in the "field of gold" look at the little blips off the tip of my shotgun barrel, those are birds at the far end of the field. In the original vid they are clear as day, uploaded you can barely see them.

To give an example of the quality difference of video taken between Point shoot camera video mode and GoPro, The short clip where you hear "ROOSTER", that was shot with a Canon P&S.
