Gender preference for bird dog?

I've had both males and females. The last two, a GWP and Springer, were males. They were both rescues. The GWP was a handful. The Springer is much more accomodating.

BEST was a female GWP, the "one-dog" everyone hopes to have. Tractable, congenial, great pheasant dog, and would lay around the yard as I worked, or went into town.

Both recent males would wander if left off lead, or out of the run.

Think I prefer a female for the single-dog hunter.

What have been your experience(s)?

I like thick headed males, but females are great also. My male JP is the best, house broke from day one (really I can only remember one time he pee'd in the house). He's the hardest hunting, no cover to thick, no quit dog I've ever seen. I know he'll protect me mine with his life. Doesn't wander from our property and is a joy in the house. My female Daisy on the other hand loves running to the neighbours property. All in all when I look for a pup gender is never chosen before hand, I just want that fiery, fearless, knuckle head, male or female.

I have owned both, but the last three have been males. I enjoy that battle of wills that occasionally surfaces. Mine must be watched when out. We live out in the country so he has several acres to roam, but if I lose track of him while out he's gone. He just kinda sneaks away. He always comes back, 2 or three hrs later. In the field he's a monster. He loves the heavy cattails and deep crp.

I've had both . . . some males were headstrong, my current one is absolutely golden . . . gentle, loyal, and a superb hunter. Both females were also very good.

I'm on my third female , and they have been all business.....from an early age.
My latest dog, a male. Is a joke, let me refraise that....He's entertaining.
Seriously, he's a goof ball and i like him alot...but sometimes it would be nice if he would get down to business.(duck blinds)

I've had about an equal number of males and females. The last two have been females. If, and when, I would ever get another dog it will be a female. They have just been easier and since they are also house dogs I prefer them in the house. But this is another issue that really boils down to personal preference and there are not right or wrong answers.

I don't care which one it is as long as they get the job done. A male better not do a girl job, and a girl better do a man job in the field. I own both and have all my life, both have worked out well.
