Game warden checks?

I know of a guy, now deceased, who was a SD landowner that hosted pay hunters and was involved in lots of illegal stuff, including trapping and killing birds of prey. 2 wardens embedded with a group of his hunters for a few years in a row, hunted 2-3 times over successive years. The guy was busted, the judge sentenced him to jail for the first 20 days of the season for 3 years…don’t know the guy, he farmed 15-20 miles away from my area, but he’s the uncle of one of my farmer pals. Good penalty!

The problem is no poachers go jail. The worst serial poachers just get a big fine like $20,000 and lose their license in that state for life. Jail time you need to be killing people not animals. Montana has around 100 game wardens to cover 147,000 square miles. Definitely need a lot more. It is a very tough job, and not a lot of pay.
That is exactly right.Good comment.More wardens, better pay.

I honestly don't think I've ever encountered someone poaching other than when they've shot a hen.

Trespassing seems to be a significantly more widespread problem where I hunt and most of that stems from deer hunters.

Big game Hunter is are almost always rednecks and low baggers, and you are right they do most of the poaching. However there are bird hunters who poach from the road. Shooting from inside their vehicle with 22s.

I actually know two or three game wardens, and one time one of those guys was talking to me, and he said you know we just don't know who we have when we give somebody a minor ticket for a minor violation. It could just be somebody making an honest mistake, or we might have the biggest poacher in Montana and we don't even know it. I told him that in my opinion what poachers do, is they will have somebody usually a relative or a close friend drop them off, so there is no vehicle, and they dropped them off in the dark. These vehicles will be driving around without their headlights on. I know of a guy who is a well-known high school basketball coach, who is now in his eighties, but this guy is a big time poacher, and has been busted a few times, but all all he received was a slap on the wrist. Poachers are not always these Hicks driving around in these big pickup trucks, they might be driving a small economy pick up, but they always have toppers, and they like to drive Japanese vehicles. Poachers need to be stopped, so if you hear something, or see something, contact the authorities immediately, and take down as much information as you can. These people are hard to catch, and they are smart, even though they are idiots and low baggers, they are not easy to catch. We need more game wardens, and they need to get better pay, I totally agree with that other comment.

Poaching probably isn't a huge problem in South dakota, because it's so dang flat. I'm sure there are Hicks driving around poaching deer, but they don't have the same kind of problem that Montana has, I'm sure of that.

I’m just trying to keep score. So Suburbans, mid side trucks with toppers and Japanese vehicles are all considered low brow correct?

Poachers will always be in pickup trucks with toppers. Most of them are rubes and Hicks, but not all. Some are actually white collar.
