Game warden checks?

Two years ago I waited for a warden in ND to
walk down to his truck, he was on a hill glassing duck hunters. Took 15 minutes…we chatted for 20 minutes, he didn’t ask for anything. I showed him some birds, asked him some questions. A week later he was waiting at my truck at a different spot, talked for 20 minutes…he didn’t ask for anything…I showed him some birds for the heck of it. He said locals are the violators..,the first chat we had a week earlier, he left me and checked some locals…one guy briskly approached him and confessed he didn’t have a license, and told the warden to write him a ticket. Anyhow, I got back home, googled the warden’s name, in order to send him a card of thanks. Learned he lost a 30 year old son to cancer a year earlier…was diagnosed soon after learning that his wife was pregnant with their first child. Hard to fathom, my buddy and I also sent the widow a card and a modest gift of $. Damn, damn, damn. ✝️🙏

Interesting on the locals comments ... ND Outdoors use to publish the list of issued "tickets" by both cause and residency. Lot of nonresident violations, albeit rarely for overharvest / over limits.

I hunt with many guys annually in ND…many don’t realize their gun has to have 3 or fewer shells, no matter species being hunted…carelessly ignorant….

The data suggests that a bit over 5% of field contacts result in a citation. Lack of enough PFDs, improper licenses, and failure to carry license in the field are the leading causes of a citation. Only 37 citations for hunting on posted land without permission, but maybe the county sheriffs take more of those calls ???

The warden I met in ND is about 64, been a warden for several decades….retiring this spring, I believe….we talked about it in ‘24, he said he’d retire when he had 3 bad days in a row…said it hadn’t happened yet!

A few years ago several moose were killed and left in the field, near Dunseith; quite a big deal, lots of resources dedicated to this crime. I believe it turned out to be some local teens, one of whom had a dad that was a deputy shefiff, if I recall correctly. 4 moose or more, I believe….2020…5 moose…no meat taken…April/May….just looked it up.
