E Collar Training

Hey fellas- So I recently picked up a Tritronics Sport Basic for my 10 month old GWP. Within the week that I've had it, she's already responding very well and I'm pretty excited for what the future holds.

I shot a lot of wily Colorado roosters over her this past season and was very impressed with her instincts and drive. I basically let her do her own thing this year and she did begin to hold points momentarily toward the end of the season but definitely cleared her fair share of fields, much to my chagrin.

With the season over now, I am hoping to dedicate as much time as possible to reinforcement of commands both in the backyard and on the occasional pen-raised birds when I can afford it. I only hunt wild birds and while I understand all to well that some just flush wild, I am hoping that she will at some point learn to catch up and pin them but I think that may take a few more seasons.

With that in mind, perhaps my biggest desire at this point is to teach her to stop when she is hot on a running rooster's tracks to allow me to catch up and hopefully get a shot. (I am more a bird in the bag kind of guy if you know what I mean.) She is learning whoa and I plan on using that command but ideally I would like her to stop when she hears the audible tone on the collar so as to avoid the birds hearing me yelling. What is the best way to go about achieving this?

Any suggestions, ideas, either directly related or otherwise are appreciated!

its simple whenever you tell her whoa use the tone at the same time and she should start figuring it out in no time at all

What GCB said!!! Acclimation/association with the tone, NOT the zapper is the proper tool for training purposes - occasional zapping is only for follow-up reinforcement AFTER the dog clearly understands d@#!-well what is being asked or desired & says in effect, "No, I don't really want to do that right now"...

Too much e-collar for the wrong reasons has ruined many a good dog! Some of the worst perpetrators/culprits I have observed with a zapper in their hands have been low-level (or should I say low-life) so-called "professional" trainers...An e-collar misused/way-overused is not much different than kicking a dog & NEVER produces good results!!!

I really think that busting her for a weak is going to do nomore than show her no matter what she is going to get it and thats where the pound comes in becouse some idiot used a tool the wrong way when trying to teack not break but teach a dog something let me put one on you and bust you when i tell you something for a week i bet that after that week all you will be doing is pissing down your leg everytime you see me

I couldn't agree more. In fact, I wish they sold a collar that only had a tone on it. However, I must say that the low level stimulation has come in handy when she jumps on me!

using the stimulation is not the issue i use stimulation the issue is saying just burn her for a week if you have a dog that has picked up a bad habit after it is trained or if it is just refusing to do what it was trained for then use stimulation to just use it right out of the gate is not the answer at all unless like i said you want to turn your dog into a pound puppy that is affraid to even blink

try to let the dog figure it out for himself. what worked for me in the past is put you collar on a very low level just enough so that the dogs muscle twitches in the neck. say whoa and hold down the button until the dog obeys the command given once he has release the button let the dog figure out how to turn the collar off..

I used the clicker training to initially instruct the pup to whoa. Once the dog knows the command, I began using the collar to reenforce the command. I have a young dog, and she appears to be responding well. Steve

Beeper and voice commands in the first 3-6 months. All dogs are not the same just like people. When you start using juice, just use enough to get the dog to turn its head seems to work with our young dogs.
