Duck or Pheasant

So myself and my wife sat down last night. We were talking about hunting and she asked me kindly if I would only go Bird hunting or duck hunting. This being said I live in Nebraska so both are fairly good to hunt. What in the world to do, I have no clue which one the choose. Help anyone?

This would be truly and individual choice. Not something anyone else can help you with. Sorry. Now that being said, I grew up in Minnesota hunting both waterfowl and upland birds. 22 years ago, after a divorce and having to give my Lab away I gave up waterfowl hunting. Actually I've neer looked back. Really don't miss getting up so early in the morning and wading out into some slough with a bag of decoys. Now that I'm older a much prefer the the 10:00 AM start to the pheasant day. But that's just me. Each to their own.

True, it just seems duck hunting is more towards the money side then the love of the hunting. That's what I'm thinking as I have been thinking about this.

If it were not for the dogs, I would choose waterfowl hunting. I would think it would be cheaper on average, most people can find decent waterfowl within a short distance of their home, don't think the same can be said for upland, luckily I live in KS. But, being the fan of a good working dog that I am, it has to be upland. You can train a good retriever, a good upland dog has to learn on his own.

I would choose upland hunting of course, but I do love to duck hunt. One of the nice things about duck hunting is that I can get up in the morning and shoot some birds, get home, and still get a full day of work in.

You are saying guys that waterfowl don't have a love of hunting? Come down sometime and I will show you some duck hunters that have more of a love of hunting than many pheasant guys I have run across. You also won't find a group of guys that treat their dogs better, as I watch mine licking his balls on our leather couch.

Yeah I know some good duck hunters and they do treat thier dogs well, it's just hard with the season some what at the same time to do it both.

Just don't tell her.. Say honey..im going hunting! Be back later! If you stock the freezer with duck or pheasant meat does it really matter?

I choose whichever is better at that time.
Last year, upland was almost non-existent in my area, so waterfowl it was until freeze up.
Luckily, after that I got into some good grouse areas.

Granted, I don't have the huge set ups like some duck hunters. A dozen deeks, a call, and a faithful companion are all you need.

I love upland hunting and have made a few trips to Kansas to chase the birds there, but therein lies the problem. You gotta make the 10hr. trip.

The only pheasant you will see in SW Arkansas comes from a pen, as will the quail these days. The last wild covey of quail I have seen here was three years ago and I was happy just to see them flush-would not dream of shooting at them.

I am ten minutes from a LOT of fine public waterfowl hunting; long time member of a lease with about 15 miles of meandering wooded river that holds quite a few woodies and mallards and have a pothole slough on the back of my farm that will be home to many, many woodies and gadwall from Dec. to Feb. My ESS, Gus, loves the water AND the ducks!

Not hard to guess my vote.
