Double Skunk

Took both dogs out to hunt some sharpies this morning. We had only seen one sharpie when Elle, my young dog, went on point. Mattie, the 7 year old, came up behind her and backed her. All of a sudden they both broke. I knew darn well what had happened. SKUNK! Elle got the worst of it and Mattie just inhaled some of the spray. We walk less than a 1/4 mile over a hill and Elle is back on point again. Yep, you guessed it. SKUNK! Two within 10 minutes. The second time she got it right in the mouth. She was foaming at the mouth and throwing up. Fortunately I carry a spray bottle of SCOE 10X. It did a decent job of neutralizing it until I got home and could give her a bath with the hydrogen peroxide formula. What started out as a beautiful day in the field didn't end so well. Three hours later Elle was still puking but I think everything is now under control. Hopefull this is my first and last for this hunting season. Seems I average about one a year. :(

How well does that product actually work? I visited the site and seems intriguing.

There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, that will completely eliminate skunk ordor. At least from my multiple experiences. But the SCOE 10X does at least knock it down to a tolerable level. What I like best is that you mix it in a quart spray bottle that you can take with you. The spray bottle makes it easy to apply in the field. It's tough to use the hydrogen peroxide in the field.

Skunks are very thick this year. I have seen a ton of them alive and hit on the Hwy

I agree the peroxide concoction works real well, but tough to deal with out in the field as you need lots of water for rinsing.

How much of the SCOE 10X would you actually use if your dog gets a healthy dose of skunk?

I see they mix it into a 32oz spray bottle.

I used about 2/3's of the bottle yesterday. If your dog got a healthly dose from the skunk you could use most of the 32 oz. bottle. Remember is supposedly has a shelf life of 2 years. I know the bottle I had mixed was beyojnd that but it still worked to some degree. A fresh bottle would probably been better. I have some new bottles on order.

What fascinates me, is that dogs never seem to learn when it comes to skunks. My Britts are fur lovers of the first rank, don't seem to mind the smell, heck I think a couple actually enjoy it!. Youcan break them from deer, snakes, rabbits, but skunks, porcupines, and house cats seem to be irresistable. I bought a trailer to handle just this issue, and yes you could still smell them at the motel, outside in the trailer, two days later. Worn off in about two weeks, unless you get them wet, then it's deja vu.

I have been there with just one skunk George and never want that again. I hate to hear you had your ruined by something like that. I hope you have better luck the rest of the season......Bob

Seems I average about one skunk a year. This year appears to be a banner year for skunks judging by the number of dead ones on the road so this may not be the last one for the year. Sure hope I'm wrong.

So you all you guys heading out to SD, be prepared. My dog just came over an layed down by me as I'm typing this and she still has a little skunk odor to her. I'm sure she'll smell real good when she gets wet. :)

Unbelievable! I reported about 10 days ago that Elle, my young Brittany, got into 2 skunks within about 10 minutes. Well today was the pheasant opener and Elle pointed 2 more skunks. I got her called off the first one and all we got was a brief scent of it, never saw it. The second one she was on point and another guy and I were kicking around trying to flush a rooser, couldn't get the bird to fly so I sent Elle in and saw the weeds to her right moving and out walks a skunk. He stopped, turned and looked me, raised his tail and I filled his "stink hole" with a load of #6's. Elle just got some smell on her from running through the weeds nearby. It sure could have been a lot worse. Those darn skunks are all over the place this year. I'm hoping the weather turns cold so they start to hole up. My older Brittany got into one in March so I'l having a banner year so far. :(

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: Sorry George it is too much. Good luck keeping them dogs away from those stinky ^%^%%%'s the rest of the year. And don't get bit kicking around for a rooster. Them dam things are still one of the worst carriers for rabies. Good post to get people to make sure shots are updated.

Yup..skunks are thick in SD this year. My chessie got sprayed today and I've seen a ton of them dead on the road. This was the second one I've seen in the field already this year.

My pups nose was pretty much up the skunks a-hole when it sprayed. His body is smelling pretty good now, but I don't think I'll ever get it off his face. He has skunk breath too...

Well Zeb, my first point of the year was a skunk. Axel did not get it bad tho, even tho he picked it up. It was pointed off to the side when it cut loose. I decided not to put the collor on the dog because it was a small field. Thankfully he listened too me and got out of the way. Shot the shunk as it was taking aim at me.
Ten minutes later the dog pointed just fifty yards from where I downed the skunk. I was a bit aprehensive about kicking around. When I did, a rooster got out and I missed!:(

ZEB----I am getting closer to your neck of the woods. Will hunt near Tulare30 and 31st of Oct. Do not think I can take Monday off as guiding Monday thru Thurs. next week. That leaves 1 day for the real job.
On 19,29 21 of Nov. will be at Doland. Maybe sneak out on the 18th?

I hope you shot them both!

Didn't see either one and I wasn't going to kick around in the weeds to find 'em. I just got the dogs and myself the heck out of there.
