Dog tested positive for heart worms, season over:(

I notice mosquitos hatch every time there is any warmup for a day or two, even in January and February. With the wild coyotes, foxes and neighbors untreated canine repository of infection, I don't think we have the luxury of discontinuing treatment in winter.

I use Ivomectin every month, 0.1 ml per 10 lbs of body weight orally and pyrantel (sic) in liquid form for the other worms. It' my understanding that doesn't work for hook worms though, but I don't think there is much that does work for them.
So far, knock on wood, no problems!

Hooks and whip worms are the toughies. I have used a massive dose of panacur/ safeguard horse paste, 100#s of paste for every 10# of dog, for three days in a row. It works. This on a rescue german shepard who was reduced to bloody diareha and on the advise of a vet. It's hard on the dog if they are debilitated from the worms, like this one was. Dog had a full recovery, gained about 20#'s in a month, still going strong 5 years later.

I use interceptor, give it to my dogs on the first day of every month so wont forget. Also when I take my dogs to the vet for there yearly shots take a stool sample and have them check for worms. So far they have never had worms so believe the interceptor is worth the money even though it is fairly expensive.
