I have a 2 yr old yellow lab and in the fall when hunting and winter I can not keep weight on him I am wonder which food you guys think I should switch to to feed more calories or more protein to keep weight on him.
I currently feed science diet

I really like pro plan performance seems to give my dog a nice coat not to many stools and keeps her weight where I like her at.

I feed Canidae ALS (All Life Stages) to my 2 year old yellow lab. Very high quality food at a decent price compared to Taste of the Wild or Blue. More expensive than what you'll pay for food at Walmart, but you get what you pay for.

If you are having trouble keeping weight on your dog in the fall I would switch foods. I don't want this to turn into a debate about which dog foods are the best because we have had way too many posts on this site about dog foods. Try switching to a good high quality food with higher levels of protein and fat then the Science Diet you are currently feeding. Pro Plan Performance would be a great choice as would many other quality dog foods. I feed NutriSource and they make a Performance formula also. You probably want something that has 30% protein and 20% fat. Once you find a food you like you can adjust the serving portion to maintain the proper weight.

I am a" no grain" guy for my dog and when working my Lab hard I add raw meat with a lot of fat -- fat end of a packer brisket works well

Great advice

I will take it a step further and risk starting a debate. Science Diet is a poor quality food. Their are many brands that are better and cost LESS. Look at the back of the bag and try to find a food with around 3000-3700 calorie per cup. Than feed around 3-5 cups a day.

Steve, I think you have your calories per cup wrong. Most foods run about 400-500 calories per cup. I think you are confusing it with calories/kg.

Yep your right. I should have said K/cal. Thanks for the catch.

Man I hate it when I use up my 1 mistake for the day so early!

Man, you're lucky! My wife only allows me one a week.

Here's my .02

First off ditch the Science diet.

Proplan
Nutrisource
Native

These would be a few that would be much better suited for a hunting breed.

When selecting a brand look at the back of the bag for the KCal/cup (calories per cup). Anything above 400 is going to be a denser feed for very active dogs. Regardless of protein/fat percent, look at the K/CAL

Sometimes the KCAL is listed as KCAL ME/kg. If so, again anything 4000 and higher is going to be your denser feed.

When you have selected a brand/formula don't put too much stock into the feeding guidelines on the back of the bag. Those are just that, guidelines. Feed according to body shape. You should be able to see a slight hour glass shape through ribs to the hips and if you run your hands down the side of the rib cage you should be able to feel them without too much trouble. I will say if you have to feed more than 4 cups total per day of any feed just to maintain a good body shape, then the feed more than likely does not have enough calories.

Which Science Diet food are you feeding? That will make a HUGE difference. It's very good food but like any other food you have to feed the right one and the right amount.

So Teamrig, you have quit a few responses with various opinions. Like Zeb said, could be a debate, many previous posts have covered the subject. Each one of us would recommend the brand of dog food we feed our dogs because that is what works for us. There will always be something better...according to someone else. You would think we were salesmen for the company behind each dog food(be great if we got paid). Just human nature to want to believe we are doing the best for our field companions. All we can do stems for the framework of our understanding, can't go beyond what you our taught. It may take some experimenting by you based on the many responses to find what works for you and your dog. At least you have a foundation to build upon.
All we want is the best dog....so sing along if you remember
"My dog's faster than your dog,
My dog's bigger than yours,
My dog's better cause he gets Ken-L Ration
My dogs better than yours."
