Deer Die Off

I plan on sitting, like you, but without a tag.

I just traded my 2012 deer tag for 210 lbs of USDA choice Angus Sirloins aged 26 days.

I'm fully capable of making that decision on my own rancho! But thanks!
We are still trying to gather information for 2000 acres we hunt. Is it happening on
the land and how bad is it. I only have doe tags so I'll base my decision on many different factors. I do know I need some meat in the freezer! I enjoy going so much, I may just go sit out there and act like I'm deer hunting. Lol.

No,it stops at your landowners fenceline, your good to go.

I sent mine back and I aint a rich man by any stretch. Any deer we lose West River will just make the situation that much worse,we had a big dieoff last year in the same area, and a drought since then.2000 acres is the size of a city park in Western SD.What do I know?,I just drive around the State all the time, year round. You folks in MN probably have a better knowledge of the situation.

There comes a time when that makes more sense

There come a time when u realize that it is cheaper to buy your meat then hunting it. With gas prices and motels rooms and trying to find a place to hunt it all adds up to way more then the local meat market. :( But the thrill of the hunt is still the driving factor ;) And getting away with the boys for a week or so has a certain satisfaction of it's own that u can't find in the supermarket .....

I was planting winter wheat and my renter was harvesting the beans in a field south of my shelterbelt. He call me (I was in tractor on other side of shelterbelt) to inform me he have come a cross a nice buck. (By now everyone in our area of South Dakota has heard of huge numbers of dead deer being found. this picture was of the buck he found. We firgure this was one of the largest deer in our area and was on the hit list last year. In the process of finishing the 40 acre field he found 2 fawns and one doe dead as well.

I would appreciate getting some educated guesses on what this deer would score.

By the way, this deer is in South Dakota. In some counties the Game and Fish are offerings refunds on deer tags and are taking all left over tags off the market.

Just so you all know,it is illegal to pick up the racks off any dead deer you may/will run across. It's a real issue and may just get wogut came as more deer concentrate on less waterholes.
Found a dead 13 pointer on my property in Iowa last December. Called DNR, officer came out, found no wounds or sign of injury. Issued me a salvage tag to legally take the head. Couldn't you do the same in this situation?

Not sure if GFP issues salvage tags under those circumstances,or not.I know you can get one for a deer that you hit with a vehicle.Last year the Warden in Lyman/Jones had quite a pile of nice racks in the truck by the time season was over.

Just guessing about B and C score from the pic, looks 20" wide, main beams look 20 long but all the points are kind of short.I'd say 160's?

feel bad for my buddies that already invested in a deer hunt this year, money wasn't right for me to go but now looks like I'm money ahead.

If that was a shot at me because I'm living in Minnesota, I guess you seem to think you know alot more than me because you drive around the state of SD. Fact of the matter is I grew up in SD and lived there for 25 years, and still have many friends and family that own land in SD that I hunt on. So I'm very informed on what's going on back there. So, we'll see what the landowner say's when the time comes. He's had alot of deer dying, but he's also had over population. So we'll make the decision in the next few weeks whether or not we turn our tags in. I may keep the tags, so I can go coyote hunting instead.....

Best of luck to you,and yours.

All of us who normally hunt for deer, choose not to. It's going to take years to bring back the heard's, if they ever fully recover. It's just the right thing to do

Well there is another side to this story. I hate to see anything die this way and I don't know where the population will be when this is over, but if this means I won't be wintering 150 deer this year that won't be all bad. Maybe now I can replant the trees that they killed and get them big enough to survive by the time the population comes back. Now if the coyotes that eat them die too there would be a positive side to it.

Along the same lines, back 20 years ago, when I was hunting predators hard, I opted to leave the fox alone as they were in the midst of a mange cycle.... As it turned out, it didnt matter, Mother nature was in charge, and she took them all whether I hunted them or not.. Now, Im not saying that one should hunt or not hunt, Im just saying that it may not matter in the big scheme..

you can always come to kansas we have plenty of them damn deer running around for everyone to put meat in the freezer

We scored this deer last night. 144 6/8 net after 7 3/8 deductions. I guessed 140 while my buddy guessed 156. Course I was guessing net and he was guessing gross.:D

Without throwing a tape on it, my guess was 140 also Chris.

what about NE corner of SD? around all the prarie pot holes and lakes in NE SD? Are the deer dieing there too?

Anyone know if it is a state wide issue or certain areas? I may call the State boys to check ... I would guess it is worse in some areas and less in others, but just guessing.

My buddy was going to bow hunt while I am there bird hunting.

I will say there was a TON of deer the last few years out there. Deer were everywhere we bird hunted !

I live in ohio. We have good population of deer here too. It is common for us to have pockets of deer die late summer. We had some pockets of it this year from what I read from ODNR

I went out after sharpies this morning and only found one dead doe. I saw 15-20 deer running around in the distance. ONly saw one sharpie and I was in the truck when it flew by. Got a lot of good exercise in and the dog got a work out.
