Damned Quill PIgs

I've had a few run ins with them. Most were pulled out with the multitool. Not fun for the dog or me. But the worst was a few years ago in Michigan. My possum killing little wire must have tried multiple times to take one. Over 100, from the back of her tung and throat to her eyes. Cost me 600.00. Only damage was she took one through a tear duct. It just waters more than the other.

I haven't had a run in with a porcupine or a skunk in well over 20 years. I did come across a badger one time in some tall grass, I could have killed him, but I didn't. And I don't shoot porcupines anymore or skunks or anything like that. I just I just don't or coyotes.

My North Dakota. Be out there In two weeks. My rancher friends said it should be epic. I hope Been battling prostate cancer for ten months. My best friend has some dark days ahead of him too. We are just hoping for a hunt for our memories. The Lord blesses us that worships him. Please say a prayer for us. This could be the last one.

Prayers sent your way. I truly hope you have the hunt of a lifetime and enjoy the state I love so much.

May God bless you and keep you 🙏

I have never once encountered a porky, skunk, or badger while grouse or pheasant hunting. 25 years.
How in the hell did you accomplish that? I had one dog skunked 5 times in one day, still shot a limit over her. It seems I have one epic porky event every year. As for badgers I have only run across them in the field every few years, if you don’t count how many holes I have fell in.i feel great if I only have a couple vet trips every season.

No doubt, I have had plenty of porky/ skunk incidents…. As to the badger holes, I swear if there is only one in a field I will find it

Wow. You were very lucky she didn't end up with much more serious injury.

We had a lab that got skunked on a regular basis. Would run right up to them with her tail wagging. Our best guess for this behavior was that she grew up with a couple black & white cats we had at the same time, and thy would play together. We think she saw skunks as her cat buddies...

Oh yeah badgers do kill pheasants.
I don't generally shoot badgers as they keep the thirteen line and pocket gophers in check. They are a PITA when they dig holes in the county roads, though. Over the years I have shot a couple that threatened me or my animals. One came out of his hole and straight at me like a Polaris missile as I walked by his hole. I wasn't messing with him or his hole, must have just woke up in a bad mood (as if badgers have any other type of mood). I was carrying a 1911 45 Auto and made a defensive shot that stopped him then & there. I would like to claim it as a feat of superior pistol skill, but it a pure luck reflex shot. Good thing too, as he was not bluffing and would have hit my legs like a chain saw...

I keep a skunk kit in my truck, so I have what I need if my dogs get hit. I don't want to have to run around trying to find stuff to buy in the middle of Podunk. I've never run into a badger but I've probably stepped in their holes more than once. I'm hunting more and traveling further these days, so the chances for my dogs running into something is probably going up.
