Damned Quill PIgs

Best advice is to grab the quill as close to the skin as possible with a quality gripping device like a needle holder. Leatherman will work.
Might need to sedate dog depending on numbers or location of quills. When removing quills make sure to safely dispose of them so they don’t end up on your clothes or another dog finds them to roll on. A sharp tug will get 98% out. Keep looking for several days to find the hidden ones in a long haired dog. Good oral exam is needed. The worse one I worked on was sedated for over 90 minutes while we removed 600-700 quills from the head and mouth, front limbs and chest. There had to be a naked quill pig somewhere. The male littermate had only 70.
Do not need to clip them. Not the worst confrontation I dealt with.

Saw a video about year so ago, they trimming the end of quill about 1/2inch before pulling it out. They said it deflated the quill. making it easier to pull out.

Cut them right where they change color. The quills have some pressure in them that is released. Twist to remove.

Still not easy, but easier.

I told this one before, but my old shorthair got it in S.D. Just 10 or so. Thought we got them all out. 3or 4 days latter I was petting him and checking him out. I felt what I thought was a thorn about halfway between his nose and eyes. Pulled it out from the top and it was a broken quill that had migrated all the way through the top of his mouth.

So glad to not have these in Iowa!

Last week I saw several FB vids where a porkie shows-up on someone's door step. They confront it and it shoots a multitude of quills at the person....I really hope that is AI generated!!

They can't shoot quills, so sounds like AI. They flip their tail and the quills pull out of the porcupine, since there are barbs on the ends. Or a dog bits at them and gets a mouthful/faceful.
