Correct Line

Depends if I absolutely know where it is or just have a general idea.

General idea:
"Dead bird" means go hunt for that dead bird.

Absolutely know:
"Dead... Line, back!" "Dead" is a pre-cue to get her on the right topic. "Line" is said when she's look at the line, and once she's looking "back" is said quickly. From there I can handle her, but being she's a spaniel I let her drift a little with the wind (spaniels aren't straight line runners!)

I like one syllable commands: "Fetch" is mine.

Ive lucked out with retrievers. Most of mine have done it naturally and really well. Pointing dogs though. Never have owned flushers.

You could say "bowling shoes" and the dog doesn't know the difference. It's all about consistency. With me, it's simply "bird down" with a hand signal in the direction of the fall or scent trail. But I don't keep calling the dog back to the fall, if he heads off in a direction that makes no sense to you, trust him. With a half-decent dog this is one of the easiest commands to teach
